About Us

Thomas Wheaton is a freelance garden designer for private clients in the Narragansett Bay, RI and Metropolitan Boston areas. Specializing in environmentally friendly and water-wise planting schemes, he also designs intimate and relaxing spaces including patios, decks, courtyards, walkways, pools and ponds. Services offered include one-time consultations for those who find themselves needing only a bit of guidance along with some specific suggestions, as well as full design services from initial concept to contractor-ready documents. In 2012, Thomas Wheaton graduated with distinction from UK-based Garden Design School, where he was trained in all aspects of landscape and planting design by eminent and award-winning British designers Robin Templar Williams and Moira Farnham. He has been an active member of the New England chapter of the Association of Professional Landscape Designers since 2011.

For a landscape renovation project, I hired Tom and another designer for the concept phase. I described a general concept for the objectives, and expressed a particular interest in drought-tolerance. Tom listened well, applied excellent creativity, delivered on time, and has a wonderful easy going style, while showing great passion for his work. Especially notable was that he went above and beyond by carefully mapping the entire property, which exceeded my expectation but contributed to his (and my) understanding of how the project area fit into the overall property landscape. Based on his initial design, I chose him to continue with the next phase. I found his ideas refreshing, his style most pleasant, and his commitment outstanding. I would definitely work with him again.

Tom is a very accomplished drafter, designer and landscape professional. We've worked on several projects together, small and large budget and he has come through on his word every time. Tom has a very keen sense of space, an amazing knowledge of plants. He is always prepared during presentations with clients and he even has come to the nursery with me! I'd work with Tom any time, and I'm sure I will again this year.

Far beyond what I could imagine. After seeing a great job Tom did for some friends, I asked him to redesign my yard. I'd seen some of Tom's work but mostly projects of much grander scales than my cozy little yard. After a visit to measure the space, he took very little time to present me with a beautiful draft of what he envisioned. My response: THIS is a DRAFT? It was stunning! And while his artistry and vision were what initially impressed me, it was his descriptions and explanations of "what" and "why" everything was there that blew me away. He knew I wanted a low-maintenance yard and in my mind I expected ground cover and stones. Instead, he delivered a beautiful, year-round, useful, relaxing sanctuary that I cannot wait to have brought to life. He is truly able to see the potential in projects of any size.
