I think a well thoughtout out table will break up the space without needing an area rug. Without photos, it will be very, very difficult to help. Indigo is a great colour. It all depends on the rest of the space, book shelves, photos, art, art frames, etc before a suggestion on a coffee table can be made.

I am completely redoing my living room, it started with the couch. I have 3 photography canvas prints of birch trees, but that is all I have planned so far. The coffee table is key, because I work from home, and hate desks so the coffee table is where most of my work as well as the couch.

Here's the lay out for now, the room itself will have a lot more space but to give you an idea

You will want to have two different options while working on the sofa. The coffe table would ideally fit into the "void' that is created with the chaise. You will want several inches of pass through space around the entire table. You will want to measure up the void and then subtract several inches from a short edge and a long edge to give you the complete picture.

You will want a proper "lap desk" (like Ikea has) so that you can work with legs stretched on the chaise. Working from a sofa at a coffee table level = neck, shoulder, back strain. You will need to make provisions for alternating positions. A lap desk will help you accomplish this.

One of the worst ergonomic positions: sitting on a soft surface, knees above the hips with back/hips tilted at 10-20 degree forward angle. This is precisely the angle you will be working at with sofa + coffee table.

You can help yourself by finding an old fashioned writing table (the portable kind with the angled surface). This can be placed on the coffee table to elevate our work surface and can be moved to another position when you are done with it. These two extra "things" should help save you several months of back pain.
