Can any door be a bypass / sliding door?

I want to replace our dated heavy mirrored 1970's bypass door. It keeps coming off the track and drives me insane both functionally and visually. It's also the first thing you see when you walk into the house unfortunately.

Other than the standard white bypass doors or mirrored doors I see at Home Depot, is there a more design-friendly alternative that doesn't break the bank? Five years ago I requested a quote from Sliding Door Co. and because the opening is 6ft 8in height, they were going to be $7K. Um...for a door that hides cleaning products? Also, can any door essentially be made into a bypass door? I bet lots of people have this question or we wouldn't all be holding on to our dated ugly sliding closet doors this long...

Bypass doors means one door passes in front of the other one. You see this a lot in closet door applications. I attached a louvered photo of what that looks like. This one left the track exposed, but you can use a trim piece attached to the wall to create a finished look if you prefer that. See the alternative one panel look with the trim. Back to the original question, I would do a bypassing unit but choose a custom door that makes the opening really stand out. like this one panel door used in New York City. All the Best!

Depending on the look you are going for you could use hardware from an agricultural supplier and then match it with a variety of doors. If its a pocket door type system this won't work. You can see this application of hardware on industrial/modern interior design and exterior/interior barn doors

Very nice finish...... But the price compared to more rustic functional pieces is exorbitant

This issue is ALSO being faced by a lot of hotels. We are replacing a lot of the mirrored bypass doors in both private homes and large hotels. We're seeing a lot of one panel or three equal panel (flat panel) doors being used which is quite contemporary and affordable. A double swinging door works with a wood jamb, or a barn slider if you have the wall space. Careful as the sliding hardware can get pricey, but there are alternatives out there.

As to your question about can any door be used as a bypass, the answer is it depends! Most doors nowadays are not solid wood, so you often need additional blocking at the top of the door when it is a slider or pocket or bypass door. Check with the manufacturer you use, but for instance we add a solid woodedge to the top of our Supa Doors for this application. Best of luck!

Can you PLEASE send pictures? I too was going to suggest the roller-door hardware. It also comes in modern finishes. Try Van Dykes Restorers to get some ideas. They have an on line store. Pictures? Placement - what is a BY-Pass door? I have actually never heard this term.
