Corkfish. Also happy it worked for you but for me it has been a disaster. No I do not work for a competitor. I am a Computer Scientist by training and quite handy around the ranch. I just finished 6 years of home remodel and know my way around the Big Box stores. I also know how to prep jobs and did prep my deck before applying the Behr. Wire brushes and belt sanders. Made no difference. The Behr product has been a complete fail.

Do NOT use Deck Over. It is crap!!!! After 1year it was peeling in big chunks. Deck Over (owned by Home Depot) after sending pictures and samples of the pieces, they agreed to pay for the job to be done completely. WHY would I want to use something this bad again! After a complete sand job and cleaning, I will stay with stain. And stay away from Home Depot

Behr Deck Over is crap sanded and redone last year now scraping up because its peeling and cracking.Not worth the money or the time..Buyer Beware..

Deckover, a Behr product is absolute pure garbage and the company itself does everything to make you feel it was your application method and not garbage product. They also take zero responsibilty for their actions in selling such garbage. I sanded my deck at the cottage and at home in Toronto in 2015 to make sure I did a proper application. The crap peeled like a banana an I am continuing to battle to receive some type of remuneratioin.

Experiencing the same bad results with Deckover that are so common on this site. The supplier often claims that it was the method of application but if that is the case how come so many people can be applying it incorrectly?? If it is so difficult to apply correctly maybe it should not be sold to the average diyer. I followed the instructions to the letter on both my home and cottage decks and now both of them are peeling like crazy. Worst still the old product does not sand well as it seems to be a bit rubbery so refinishing with another product is nearly impossible. Stay away from this product!!!!!

I'm wondering if it makes a difference if the deck is ground level. I have a 30 year old deck well off the ground and I put Deck Over on it three years ago. Still looks like new. I was amazed. Still , having heard so many other people having problems I don't know if I'll use it to do my other deck. I may go with Benjamin Moore Arborcoat instead.

DO NOT USE BEHR DECKOVER!! There is a class action lawsuit against them for this product! Anyone who has had an issue should join! We applied this product to our deck around the pool, following all the instructions, including spending the extra $ to get Behr's cleaner they recommend to use before applying. After spending a long weekend applying as per manufacturers instructions, it didn't even make it to winter! Now just 12months later it's flaky, bubbly mess that's coming off in chunks. Not to mention the mess it's made of the pool liner, filter and having awful time with the water, so we think it's also affecting the sand filter. It's a mess all through the grass and just looks terrible. We're trying to get our money back, but it's proving to be a struggle. Even if we're lucky enough to get the $250 we spent on the product, it doesn't replace the time & sweat equity invested, not to mention the possible damage it's done to the pool equipment! They clearly advertise this product is suitable for pool decks, but it clearly not! Buyer beware with this product!

Worst thing ever!!! DO NOT PURCHASE DECKOVER! Applied it to my Deck two years ago and within 1 year the paint was peeling and cracking. By second year total failure. Flaked off easily when pressure washed. Extremely hard to remove from vertical boards! Still trying to determine what I am going to do now to get my deck looking decent again!

We used Deckover last summer on our two decks, about 550 sf total deck plus railings and balustes.It is holding up very well on everything but the decking. Same wood,same age,same preparation on all.need to remove it from deck for sure,but the product recommded by HD hasn't been effective. Going to try a Rustoleum product next week. Can't stand the deck the way it looks now. Don't know what to use next. Very frustrated!

Since I just removed behr deck over from a deck that the product failed on here goes. As far as removal goes, it was quite the project to say the least. The deck is around 300 Sq. Ft. And it took about 30 man hours to totally remove it. First thing we had to do was rent a deck sander with 40 grit sand paper. That at least broke through the top layer to help get somewhere near the actual wood. Then I used 3500 psi pressure washer after deck sanding to remove any product that was loosened up. Then I used behrs acrylic stain remover, left it sit for 45 minutes, scrubbed it in, then pressure washed it again. This removed most of it. Then for the following 10 percent the remains I used a high powered orbital sander to remove the rest of the product. It's no small task, and it cost about 200 dollars in materials, and that's not including the 150 dollars. I spent on a high powered sander. It can be done, it's just a Ton of work. Unless you have a deck that's falling apart and you're just trying to buy another year or two before replacing. It, don't put this product anywhere near your deck.

I’ve been applying it commercially for 7 or 8 years and I’ve never had a failure due to the product. If it’s applied properly (two coats less than 8 hours apart, one coat with the grain and one across it) on a DRY deck at the right temperature it’s the best deck coating I’ve found. Period. The only issues I’ve ever had is when I didn’t let a deck dry thoroughly and tried to hurry the process or when working with a deck that had been treated with Thompson’s Waterseal. It contains silicone and it’s difficult to remove. As a side note, if you have to sand a deck as Jeff did please keep in mind that galvanized deck screws and nails are just coated. If you sand that coating off the head they will certainly rust and then you have a bigger problem.

Jeff Moore & Gary Corn.......JEFF, I agree with you 100%. We had to remove the stuff off of a 350 sq. ft. deck in the same method you did because the stuff just started to peal off in chunks. And we DID FOLLOW THE PREP & APPLICATION instructions to a tee. GARY, As you are using this product commercially, I only have to assume the decks you are doing are mostly new and have never had any product used on them previously. I would NEVER recommend this Behr product to anyone. BTW, our deck had never been treated with Thompson's water seal, so that wasn't our problem.

Proves the saying that outdoors, Behr can't stick to a horizontal surface on a high gravity day. ;)

I’m wondering if it could be a climate or temperature issue. I’m in north Georgia and we usually apply in temperatures between 60 and 85 degrees or so and our average year round temperature here is about 58 degrees.

Could be..we're in western Washington state. Have a moderate climate, but lots of rain in the winter.

Do Not use this product!!! Total disappointment ! Waste of money and huge amount of preparation . I too followed the directions and in less than a year my deck is peeling and rotting. I'm going to try and get more information about the class action law suit. Home Depot Shame on you!!!

My deck looks like all the other pictures. I can't bare to look at it I am so disappointed I no longer entertain or cook out because it is so unsightly.

Trying to sell our house and one issue that keeps coming up is how horrible the deck looks. We just painted with Deck Over 2 years ago. Very disappointing!

This is an update to my post from several years ago. I did reseal my deck after powerwashing - this time I used Behr semitransparent deck stain. It failed! after 1 year!!!!! The Bhr products frankly are no good at all in my opinion! This year I will be back to Benjamin Moore products!

I may have mentioned this before, but an attorney friend of mine represented and won a class action law suit against Behr about 12 to 15 years ago regarding the failure of one of Behr's outdoor house paint products. I avoid Behr like the plague after our problem with Deck over. Just sayin'.

I have tried everything to clean the high traffic areas and nothing works. The pressure washer removes the product but doesnt clean it where you walk daily.

This makes it a TERRIBLE PRODUCT in my opinion. Who wants a deck they cant clean.

I just repainted my deck with Deck Over Cape Cod Gray for the 3rd time in 10 years. My deck has full sun in the afternoons, and although after a couple of years it needed a new coat, it certainly is not peeling and looking like these pictures. In fact, not at all! I have had some staining in the past from leaves, but I scrubbed with a brush, using Simple Green and water--sometimes even just Dawn and water solution, rinsed, and then it looks nice again. It's an outdoor deck. I don't expect it to stay the way it looks right now with a fresh coat on it. Even before just painting, after cleaning, it did not look that bad. It was just time because it had been 3 years and new resin fencing made it look like it needed to be freshened up.

I'am a painting contractor in California and have done many decks. Decks are mainly a flat surface so everything that falls from the sky stays on your decks. Expect maintenance and clean and recoat every two years. I use paints for decks and Deck Over is no better than the standard deck paints.. Personally on my own redwood decks I use TWP (Total Wood Protection) oil based semi transparent stain. Easy to apply with a two gallon plastic bucket, a roller metal grid, and a weenie roller. Get some knee pads and rags too. Make application three or four boards all the way to end...and then four more brushing after you roll to ensure it absorbs as much of the product as possible. Wait awhile and wipe up all excess with rags (wear gloves). Be sure to spray a lwater on rags and lay flat on dirt or grass for 24 hours till dry and then dispose of.. Note: Clean decks first...below

This is of course after you have cleaned decks with a Hudson sprayer and Behr Deck cleaner. Saturate and then use either a pressure washer or hose off with a nozzle (pressure washers best) A picture of a job I did using TWP. If you are using newer wood pole sand before to get rid of mill glazing from saw cuts.

IAm a contractor in Painting and Decorating for Northern California. Use TWP Total Wood Protection from Kelly Moore. It penetrates into the substrate and lasts two years on wood decks. Paint will work but don't buy Deck Over just get any regular Deck Paint. Maintenance is every two year irregardles (regardless). Clean decks to start with a Behr green label Deck Cleaner. Spray on liberally with a Hudson garden sprayer. Wash clean after letting sit. You can use a broom to work the cleaner into the deck but use old shoes. Use TWP (Total Wood Protection) from Kelly Moore Paints in many colors Semi Transparent Oil.. Put into, after shaking lightly a two gallon pail with weenie roller and metal grid in bucket. Pour in a third of product. start at point furthest away from stairs(you'll want a way out).Start with four boards and work all the way down. Keep going. Rag off using knee pads with clean cotton rags and once saturated with excess oil lay flat on ground with lots of water on them. Leave for 24 hours before collecting rags for disposal. TWP is a great but deck maintenances are every two years as you're dealing with a flat surface that gets a multitude of weathering conditions. Paints are the same every two years with cleaning beforehand. Enjoy.

My 80 year old husband sanded , on his knees, our 13 x 18 deck down to bare wood as per directions. Also applied Deck Over as directed and it looked good for 1 year...then got dirty that we could not wash off. At 2 yrs the deck is started peeling and is very stained. Now at 3 yrs, it is a dirty peeling mess. At our old age we thought the hard work put into this deck would last enough years for our use. WRONG! We are too old to do this again and it is too expensive to hire it out. I read reviews but we thought perhaps correct prep wasn't used and we already bought 5 gal and another gal extra. Money sure wasted but more than that the hard work involved. We have pics showing the prep work and the first glowing year. Someone please make Behr pay for false advertising and a s we call it, a bad product. Don't but Deck Over!

I live in Maryland and used Deck Over to rehab my old deck that faces south and gets a lot of sun . Big mistake ! It peeled and chipped in the traffic areas by the end of the first summer and I had to spend a lot of money and time stripping it off the deck so that I could try some thing else . Deck Over is not what it is advertised to be and I wouldn‘t use it again .

Head over to HomeDepot.com and leave a negative review there also. I did. Pictures help!

Concerning the behr deck over I'm presently (summer of 2018 two coats applied) scrapping and power washing off my deck, a product which was put on meticulously. Have discovered a vast amount of moisture being trapped underneath, and thus rotting out the wood from within, and out of sight, So it's not just an issue of some spots needing to be sanded down and prepped for a few fixer upper coats. It rained last 2 nights ago and today I pulled strips off and hence my discovery. Actually, I consider myself fortunate that in various areas cracks appeared or I would never have discovered the deeper issue of trapped moisture and then latter to find rotted wood - say 3 or 5 years in the future.

As to why I would ever sand the deck and then reapply 2 coats of the same product - as suggested by the Behr folks in two earlier talks this week- I can only say that they told me in today's chat it's been reconfigured to deal with the adherence issue, but then only when pressed did I get a reassurance that the 'new' design addressed, in addition, the moisture trapping issue. (the first two representatives never mentioned the new design; only when I brought up the moisture -today's chat- did the new and timely info surface. Do the math and then ask the question, 'if it's presently April of 2020 just how much time has this new version or 2nd generation been out and about to be verified by the public???? Well, there you go.

lesson learned: always check these forums out first before trying out a new product.

im scraping my deck now, it is a mess. I think this is the "new" product I am scraping off, has only been on for a few years, started peeling about 9 months after application....at least its a small desk. cant find an easy way to get it off....

There is NO easy way to get it off. I have been working on it for 5 years and some is still there. They finally settled the class action lawsuit.

After that experience, I avoid a Home Depot (0owner of Deck Over). I can’t believe they are still selling it!!!

Has anyone tried painting over deckover with porch paint? My deck was painted with deckover a few years ago; it is covered and only peeling in a few places.. thinking about sanding the spots that are peeling and simply re-painting with porch paint. Has anyone tried this?

@Catherine Temple, Deckover was one of our NIGHTMARES !!! Our deck was over 600 sq.ft. We prepared it as instructed and after one winter, it peeled in large sections. We had to scrape and remove the deckover with a sander we rented, before we could redo. The problem today is you can't find an oil based stain because of the damned environmentalists.

It works great on floor boards if you oil base prine it first then it will bond

BEHR Deckover was a gross waste of my money. Despite preparing the wood which was not new, all the paint peeled off within a few months . But, instead of refunding my money for the cost of the paint and the labor to install it, Behr sent me two pallets of replacement Deckover which obviously did not want and had no use for. Consequently, I have gallons of useless Deckover sitting in my shed gathering dust.

@Janet Harris, I feel your pain. At least we got our money back for the product........but nothing back for all of our labor and sander rental that created hours & hours of our time to sand the peeling Deckover off of our deck. I will NEVER buy another Behr product again.

Well my Deckover is coming off great strips now. Such a horrible product. I am going to run my boards through a Board Planar and clean them up. Then stain them. Lot of work but with the price of lumber these days, I think it will be worth it

@User Too bad you didn't follow all the horror stories on Houzz from years back. The exactly same thing happened to us 10+ years ago and we had to sand everything off like you are now doing. The only thing that BEHR did is refund the cost of the Deckover product........the cost of labor to remove and restain was on our nickle. I'm surprised there hasn't been a class action suit against this product.

I was one of earlier posters to this thread. My paint went bad in months of application even with sanding and prep. This was just a follow up

Instead of sanding, I purchased a Planar and will take wood down to a fresh layer that looks practically new. Then stain but not with any Home Depot products
