What kind of wood are those boards? How did you achieve the color?

did you whitewash these boards though? with a whitewash stain? i just bought similar boards to put on a wall and when i brought them in the smaller room they looked too dark (even though they are a silvery grey) what would happen if i put a thin coat of whitewash over them? would it maintain a grey? or would it be too white? really appreciate your advice as i am starting construction on this room in two weeks

Hi Kim, my guess is that it would appear that you put whitewash on the boards. If you are going for a shabby chick look, whitewash might work. However, if you want an organic look, I don't think whitewash is the way to go. I have used barnboard a few times now and the colour varies significantly. The lightest boards come from the south side of the barn.

thanks for your reply. You boards here look beautiful - the exact tone I want. But there is so much light in this room you have designed. In the light of day the ones I chose are very similar - the lightest grey the wood dealer has ever had, he said - but when I brought them into my small bathroom - the colours changed significantly. im also afraid once i seal them they will become darker (i have to seal them as they are in a bathroom) i do want an organic look... so I think i will put them on the wall and go from there. If i have to whitewash them i guess i can wait until they are on the wall and Ive had a look at them... thanks again!

Hey Kim, I don't think it's mandatory to seal the wood in a bathroom, I would paint the wall behind the wood in a similar grey couloir so that, as the would expands and contracts with the seasons and/or bathroom moisture, you will not notice gaps between the wood.

yes re painting wall - very good thought thank you! re: sealing wood - really? hmmmm i guess i am just afraid it will get dirty - splashes and stuff might ruin the wood? or make stains?
