It';s best to get samples to see what appeals. Looking on a monitor is seldom accurate.

Red would look great, I totally agree. What about Merlot Red 2006-10 (Benjamin Moore) - a rich red with brown tones.

Go red - the contrast would be awesome and work really well with the surrounds. Just not too bright >> dont make it look like you believe it chases evil spirits away. LOL

I personally think this exterior would best suit a black or blue door given the tone of the brick.

I think there is enough white around the door that you could paint it almost any color and it would look great, such a handsome house to begin with. So I'd you want red, go for it, it'll look great

After all the wonderful recommendations I decided to paint the door valspar la fonda deep blue. This is just the snap shot will post the full exterior

What a beautiful blue! I can't wait to see it. It's rather the color of the summer annual, Crystal Lobelia. That would be a very pretty plant to do in the landscape between your shrubs, or in a couple of pots with white geraniums.

I'm joining this late, but my first thought had been blue. Such a lovely color! I'm wondering what your and others' thoughts are around painting the garage door black? Even with the blue door that will draw your eye, wondering if the garage is too prominent and would blend in better darker.

Would you be willing to paint the outside door to match. The black bar across cuts your door visually. Large coach lights would be so nice on each side. Your home is lovely.

Definitely larger coach light however I like the storm door black, it ties in with the shutters

Very pretty, ubee! Sure makes a difference. The larger coach light is a good suggestion too, now that I'm looking at the existing lights. I'm a fan of outside lights with frosted glass panes....just don't like seeing the light bulb. My husband thinks it's weird. Oh well. :)

I think red would be a red colour, but if you only paint the door the rest of the house would not match.
In my opinion you should paint the door and the things in the windows dark green.

oh lighting you say, not that one above, i would go more traditional colonial style and much larger, i would say about 16-18 inches. that is a big house!! also have you thought of painting the garage door? and replace the lights there too!

So VERY sorry! Didn't mean to upset you!! But, YES. Consider that right now you have a large white garage door with a house on the side... You will be shocked at how much this LIGHTENS the overall appearance of the brick. ;- ) A satin sheen black garage door with the existing creamy white trim would be extremely elegant, and the black door will transform your "garage" into a "carriage house."

P.S. I hate to say this, but f you do not like the idea of the black door there is another FINE option no one seems to have mentioned here. Personally I don't care for the blue front door. Your house appears to be a tapestry brick - which is made of a whole subtle palette of colors. Another great alternative would be to paint the front and garage doors the same color choosing from the tones in the brick. Tapestry brick has WONDERFUL plum/dove grey tones in it. You could choose something from that palette which was dark enough to mute the garage yet still rich and bright enough to liven up your front door. My best wishes to you! ;- )

A black or white front door will allow you to use lots of other colors freely in the front for - landing and walkway slate or bluestone, pots for plants ALL COLORS. Hope I've helped. You should have ZERO shrubbery along the part of the walk adjacent to the lawn. People WANT to walk on the grass! ;- ) The shrubbery should ONLY dress the house, not the walkway or the grass.

Remove the Japanese yew from its location at the garage and place it to the right of the entry in place of the dead yew. Then you'll have two tall yews flanking the entry. The yews will become quite large, but can be controlled with trimming and shaping. The box yews should never exceed the lower window ledge height.

Don't plant anything large between your front entry and the garage - it will chop up your front facade and make the garage look even more "alienated" from the house than it does already. Besides, you have a very nice tree there which does not want or need competition.

That low blue spruce will become ENORMOUS in no time at all... It should be off in the middle of the lawn somewhere or down near the road, perhaps marking the intersection of the road and your driveway. Plant it on your front lawn at least ten feet from the driveway and ten from the road.

All cypress, including all (5?) ball cypress and the two tall Italian cypresses flanking the front door should be far away from the house. They can become large and woody very fast and eventually HUGE. You could use those on the front lawn to delineate a landscaped seating area with a nice concrete bench or two - off to the right of the house about a third of the way from the house to the road. It could be a nice place to sit and read or whatever.

I'm not sure WHY all your Japanese Barberry is planted in one place? Usually they are planted in a low row in front of the yews, sort it appears they are alternating between the yews. They are planted to fill spaces between each yew. This is a standard landscaping application for a traditional brick home. So you have all the elements, just not quite in place! No idea why. In front of the Barberry are typically planted any variety of flowering bulbs including tulips, though they are short-lived. More favored are the VERY hardy Purple Dutch Iris - a beautiful bluish purple with bright yellow tongues.

Also lovely toward your right corner would be a grouping of rose bushes in yellow pink or white. I can't quite make out what that one sizable deciduous shrub on the right is. But both around the corner behind it and on the other side of the garage, you might consider planting two forsythia bushes or some lilacs. Both are hardy for your grow zone and easy care, as well. The forsythia is a fairly long bloomer, and even after it's done blooming it has a lovely light to mid-green leaf that offsets it from the yews. I hope that helps!
