I have to agree with Patricia above. The good news is if you go with her suggestion of a subway title for the backsplash, they are relatively inexpensive. Your cabinets and counter look great though!

If you end up removing the backsplash, you could consider also removing the 4" granite backsplash to provide a more seamless look.

I agree with comments above that I it would be very hard if not impossible to make the two areas coordinate now and suggest taking out the tile and 4" granite splash. However, I have to also disagree in that I almost always coordinate two different stones (granite and slate, or granite and tumbled marble, etc) and they look wonderful. The key is the color. Making sure you choose a stone or glass that pulls everything together is important. I like to mix and match textures as well. Putting a tumbled stone splash with a polished granite counter top provides visual interest. It might be worth paying a professional to come up with a few suggestions/options for you or reviewing your decision prior to install. It might cost a bit more up front but save you in the long run. You could change out the outlets to dark brown with Oil Rubbed Bronze covers to pick up some of the darker colors in the granite. Lots cheaper than redoing the entire backsplash. Also look for some things to use on the counters and elsewhere in the room that pull the backsplash colors into the room.

Put the outlet covers on and add the counter accessories and then post again. I bet it will already look better. Again, right now, you are just focusing on them alone and not as part of the whole look. Pretend like you love it and set up your kitchen, and then see if you really do love it. And share the pics with us again, too.

I agree the above comments, and I couldn't agree more with Lucinda, the 4" back-splash definitely must go, it never looks right with tiled back-splash.

Patricia Colwell has it right. Why do people install travertine/marble, etc... with granite? To my eye it always looks terrible. It must be heartbreaking to realize that a mistake's been made when you're this close to the end. Get the look you want, don't try to make this work.

I have heard of staining landscape limestone to get an aged look by using stain. You might want to purchase stone and/or concrete stain and apply to a sheet of leftover tile to see the results. If you get a result that you like and decide to stain the backsplash I would follow with a sealer to help hold the stain. However if your tile has already been sealed, this probably would not work.

Here's the final product! We left the same backsplash and counter but painted the cabinets white.

The outer part of the kitchen looks much better with the white. BUt I don't feel that the red colour on the island relates to anything in the whole kitchen, and i feel it sould be white too, or a brown that is in the granite...

Bummer!

Before ripping it out... a last ditch suggestion. The mosaic is natural stone, right? Have some left over? Try experimenting with some concrete stains and see if you can doctor the mosaic to more closely match one of the hues in the granite. If you luck out, problem solved and you have to two textures you were originally going for.

If and when it comes time to stain the backsplash itself, take plenty of time to properly mask and protect the granite counters and seal the tile afterwards.
