Wood against wood floor transition?

Any ideas would be appreciated. My wife and I have just purchased a house, the majority of the house has real wood floors, except in the family room which has carpet. Our plan is to rip the carpet out as our family suffers from allergies.

Our question is, can you and would you butt another pattern, color wood up against another wood floor? If so, any suggestions on the transition to use?

Thanks in advance, we appreciate it. Sorry, no pics.

Can you match what you have ?
Have you had a flooring contractor look at the floors to see if he can match them ?

If they can't match the floors you can transition to another flooring but it must be done so that it looks right, and there is no one answer to how to make it work.

I only have a few images in my file to share with you.......

A cork floating floor can be a lovely transition from carpet to solid surface. It is different enough to stand on it's own without competing with existing hardwood. It can be clicked together and T-mouldings can be used to transition from one floor to another. Cork can keep the same "soft, quiet" feel of carpet without the allergens associated with them.

Hi Michael, I agree with Lampert and could offer more help if you could supply us with a picture. We love pictures :)

Thanks all for the replies, my apologies for not being able to provide pictures. We just put in the offer for the house, so until the house is actually ours I won't be able to provide any of the exact situation.

So, at this point I don't know if we will be able to get a contractor out there, perhaps he or she could provide a good match and our troubles would be over...I'm not banking on that.

Someone had suggested a completely different color wood shade and to have the slats running a different way creating additional contrast...has anyone ever seen that? This would add the contrast as well as clearly define the different rooms that are connected.
