New bathroom on a budget

Wanting a vanity to accommodate 2 sinks wasn't possible without tearing out the old cabinet which is solid pine wood and the fact that the walls on the ends were not tiled to the floor. Instead we remodeled the existing cabinet and added dimension and feet to the bottom. This bathroom is from the 60's. It is feminine and perfect for me and my alterations business as I have a lot of women using this bathroom. The bathroom walls look pink but is a color called wild rice.

The cabintry is original in this bathroom and had 2 sinks. I wanted to upgrade the look. The old sinks were removed as well as the old top and a new top on the vanity with 2 new sinks installed. There are new doors on front of cabintry with a build out to make it look like a vanity. Feet were added to the bottom. The new doors are oyster white and the front of the cabinet was recovered. I hope this answers your question.

The crown molding, new custom countertop of cabinet ( built out for shape and dimension and new piece behind drawers built out), new doors, recover front of cabinet, feet on vanity (which was a bit costly but achieved the look). I kept the gold fixtures and brass knobs on the doors and reused. Needless to say our carpenter, Todd, is wonderful. Approximate cost which included labor and materials was approximately $2,000.00 which did not include the sinks. The goal was to have it look like a piece of furniture but use the existing cabinet.

your before and after pictures are the same. You just covered the sink with all those papers but the faucet is sticking out, and the dish plate behind the round mirror and put the drawer back!

Did you buy the doors or did your carpenter make them? I have a similar bathroom vanity.

nadege148 The doors were purchased and our carpenter made the drawers.

Hi jimandjoy - so the cost to replace the 2 doors, cabinet legs and fronts was $2,000? Carpenters are charging extreme prices. Extreme pricing.

I'm researching new cabinet doors for my kitchen (Shaker doors painted off white). I found a cabinet maker online who is located in N Carolina (furniture capital of the US).

For 22 maple, no MDF, doors, 6 drawer fronts, primed painted/sealant, hinges and shipping for $1,700 - paint of my choice Ben Moore Sherwin W etc.

For installation of the doors, I have gotten ridiculous estimates from carpenters from $3,700 - $4,500 just to install the painted doors. I did more research and found videos on You Tube on how to install cabinet doors.

I ordered one painted door to see if I could install it myself and it took me just 20 minutes to measure and screw in the hinges to the cabinet.

I wish HOUZZ had DIY videos and written instructions on these types of projects.

nmaho7 The bathroom was custom designed by me. The $2,000 was for labor and materials. Materials included: Crown molding at ceiling, new formica countertop. The front of cabinetry had to be built out for the new design to line up with the countertop. 4 new doors, 3 custom drawers, 4 feet at bottom of cabinetry, pieces above doors, recovering front of cabinet. This cabinet is 73" wide. Originally I was looking for a ready built vanity for replacement. However, because of size and other issues I couldn't find one less than $1800. I think our carpenter was very fair in his pricing considering the amount of custom work that was required dealing with an existing cabinet. If you would like to send me a pic of your project maybe I can give you some ideas? Our carpenter also redid our kitchen. There are some pics on houzz of it.

in the owners one comment she said formica- I assumed it was marble- but she said formica countertop- anyways- Great JOb! Love it

rock59165 The countertop is formica and this helped keep our cost down. In addition, formica is a more practical surface for a bathroom countertop. Thank you for your comments.

Very nice remodel. Looks like two sinks in the before picture.
What a good job you did on transforming that vanity/cabinet! I wish you'd give more details. How did you manage to pull the middle forward? Are those new doors on the old cabinet? Were you able to use stock materials or is it custom?

Lon Bird - Thank you. Yes, 2 sinks before an 2 new sinks after.
Shea Joy - Thanks for asking. The original cabinet remained in place. New countertop in formica (which looks like marble) and 2 new sinks. The carpenter built out the front of the old cabinet to give a new appearance and dimension. 4 feet were added to bottom. 4 new doors in cathredral style, 3 new drawers. All pieces on the front of the cabinet and doors were made by a door company and our carpenter submitted all dimensions. He also installed the facing on the front of the cabinet (which was very small due to the fact that the doors, drawers and pieces above doors cover most of the space. I hope this helps. If you have other questions I would be happy to answer.

Fabulous redo! Love what you did. Think your pricing is very good, bathrooms are horribly expensive to redo. Totally surprised that the counter top is granite, you certainly can not tell in the photo - do not agree with your opinion that laminate is more practical than marble in a bathroom, but then again maybe you do not have a teen daughter with a habit of forgetting to turn off her curling iron off.
    jimandjoy thanked jill302
jill302 Countertop is formica ( can withstand lots of heat, stains, chips, etc.) I didn't go with marble because of staining (fingernail polish and chemicals). Very happy with the formica.
My teenage daughter is gone but sometimes we all have accidents.

I have the same configuration and size (60"?) in one of my bathrooms, and removed the solid wood vanity because I wanted to re-tile the floors. I bought a new vanity for $2000 and have nothing but regrets. It looks nice but is poor quality, caused additional expense and I already want to replace it. I want to let you know you made a smart decision with your reno.

sunsandsong - My cabinet is 73" wide and we encountered the same situation you had. We had the floor retiled a few years ago which was tiled up to the cabinet. Our carpenter said "save the cabinet" it is solid wood. Thank you for sharing your experience.

Beautiful. Another option for formica (although this install looks amazing!) is to shop for remnants at granite/quartz fabrication shops. We often can find one and with fab and install it is a great buy for the look. Quartz is our favorite, go-to product now for bathrooms and kitchens. Remnants are our favorite way to bring in a high-dollar material at a budget-friendly cost! Great job - love the inclusion of the brass (before material) with the final project.

Great suggestions and our carpenter also suggested the same idea and did reached out to some local vendors but could not find a remnant that would really do the bathroom justice.
may I ask, did you buy the counter top at a big box store & customize it? I just love it- I am sure the price was a good one, compared to marble- love it , great job!
    jimandjoy thanked rock59165
rock59165 - Our carpenter works with a local company who makes countertops for almost anything! He made a template of the top after he constructed the bump out. Then he took the template to the vendor to have a perfect made fit. It has an ogee edge in addition to the shape. This was included in our labor and materials for the carpenter. It is usually priced per square foot. Thank you for asking and your sweet comment. It was my intent to design it to look like a vanity instead of a bathroom cabinet.
I love the counter...I am assuming it is carrara marble. The only thing I would worry about, is that it is a very porous surface and stains easily. Hopefully, that was addressed by your craftsperson. But it is my favorite surface, as far as the way it looks. I'm just afraid to use it myself. However, it is beautiful. Very nice.

Perfect renovation- a massive improvement for minimum cost and no structural alterations. The color of the tile is perfect, soft and warm without being too pink, so why remove it?

Outstanding renovation. 73" double bowl vanities made to look like furniture can cost upwards of $2,000, and then the added cost of redoing the walls and floor tile would have put you way beyond the total cost of this project. Your bathroom is gorgeous.
