Hey Jenny — I painted the daybed after I assembled it. But that was because we had my FIL assemble it while he was visiting and it just squeezes into her nursery (which did make for a difficult time painting it.) I was too lazy to disassemble it to paint it — and I'm horrible at putting together IKEA furniture. That being said, I think it might be easier to do paint before you assemble it. Or if not, just try to paint in a more open space than I had to work. I saw your comment on my blog about the colors. I think a green and white may just read as a light green rather than layers of color. I'd probably go for a green and gray combo if you want it to look more like a layer of color distressed under another color. Good luck!
