First, best of luck to you! Doing a total re-do in home decor can be a major challenge even for those of us who think we know what we're doing. Remember it won't happen overnight, or even in a week (despite what all those tv shows make us think) try and be patient.

You have a young baby, so I will try to offer some inexpensive easy fix solutions. This is the tip of the iceburg, so to speak...

1) For both the living room and dining room: Move your furniture away from the walls. (ok to leave tv there given your situation). There is no rule that item need to be 'anchored'. Maybe you did it thinking the room would look bigger, nope, usually makes the room look smaller. Bonus points if you can purchase some area rugs to bring in some color, and maybe some throw pillows for the couch.

2) The mirrors/pictures in the living room are too small for the walls they're on. If they're sentimental try a larger frames with matting. Otherwise keep an eye out for some bigger art you like.

3) Get rid of the fan, please! Sorry, can't sugar coat this one. If you can afford a more contempory fan get one (looks like it could use an extra down-rod too given the beautiful high ceilings).

You need to start with pictures of rooms that look like yours or we should say, how you would like yours to look, that are laid out as yours are.
