The beams are likely decorative since it looks like they terminate into the bulkhead housing the HVAC duct. While exposed beams can be structural, many homes utilize non-structural exposed ceiling beams to add unique character to a space. The advantage to non-structural exposed beams is that you are not limited in the size of the beams you are using, whereas with structural beams they will need to engineered to meet certain load and deflection criteria to support the floor joists (or rafters) above.
