as long as it is sealed properly and with a good sealer, it should perform just fine. The main difference is the sealer is a flat finish, rather than glossy and the texture of the stone is what gives it the leather finish.

Thanks so much! Do you think the lighter quartzites (White Macaubas, Luce di Luna, Calacatta, etc.) look and feel good in the leathered finish? We love the stones, but don't love the polished finish -- and haven't yet seen the leathered finish on a light-colored quartzite in person...

be careful, calcatta is not a quartzite and will not perform the same way, it's marble and very porous. You can get a honed finish on most stones, which is a flat finish and it should perform the same way the stone would if it had a glossy finish, but make sure you pick a durable stone or you won't like it, regardless of the finish!

I've been shown a White Calacatta Macaubas Quartzite (has slightly different names depending on the stoneyard) that is not the same as Calacatta Marble…but I have also been warned by a few people to be careful with Quartzite purchases. :) Do you think honed is better than leathered on the lighter Quartzites in terms of look, feel and maintenance, or is just a matter of preference? Thanks again for all of your help!!!!

The more I shop and study countertop options, I appreciate this post of yours and keep referring back to it. Thanks. Quartzites beautiful. Curious why you think white macaubus does better with leather. I only found leathered or polished. Anyway, still shopping and if I don't find the right pieces, quartz too seems like a good option. Best regards,

FYI, we ended up honing our White Macaubus. We love it.

It's not that it does better, when we purchased it we were not able to hone it, but we could do the leather finish, because of the nature of the stone. Leather looks like honed but it's not flat /smooth. Polished or leather on that stone will both be equally as durable. If they can hone the piece you like, it will be durable too. It's really about the look your trying to achieve, but some stones don't work well with all 3 finish options, your fabricator can let you know .

aecdgs, I've fallen in love with the white macaubas quartzite but I am wondering how it holds up to everyday wear and tear. I am particularly wondering how it holds up to stains. Our cooktop will be surrounded by it so there will for sure be a lot of splattering and we aren't in the habit of cleaning up stuff right away. Will this beautiful stone be a mistake for our lifestyle?

I'd like the answer to this exact question too, Laura. Did you ever find out the answer? Thanks.

As long as it's sealed properly, it should be fine. Leathered isn't any less durable than smooth, it's still sealed, you just need to be concerned if you switch to marble. In my experience the Macaubas is quartzite and has always held up really nicely, same with granite.
