Great idea to work on this area of the house. I would remove the banister all together and keep it open. Also I think removing the center columns on both sides would really open the porch. Add door length shutters to both sides of the front door, this will give the porch a warmer feel. That will probably make you move your door sconces but it would be well worth it. Then for color I would paint the porch floor a grey with a very slight blue tint. Those are just some ideas.
