Wood is definitely a favourite for a lot of people; however, if you are concerned about scratches then maybe you should consider ceramic/ porcelain tile 'planks' that mimic the look of wood. There is no wood floors (that I'm aware of) that don't scratch. With that said, wood floors can be sanded and refinished when the inevitable scratches occur.

If you have wood already how is it wearing if good with the dogs you have go ahead and install in kitchen if not I would choose tile.

Wood wears well, but can get destroyed if your dishwasher leaks like mine has. I replaced mine with a dark grey porcelain tile that looks fantastic, but I chipped it when my heavy blender fell on it. No perfect answer, you should go with your favorite!

Not sure of your intended style look? Saying that, there are many pre-engineered hardwood floors that are extremely resistant to scratching, etc. Probably the best is a hand scraped hickory. Pre-engineered floors are manufactured with laminated plywood and a thin layer of real wood applied to the plywood. The factory finish is very hard and scratch resistant. Don't get hung up on solid wood flooring. The P-E flooring is the next and best generation of flooring.

I have a dog & 4 kids, I live in Oregon with lots of rain, which then produces mud! I just had my kitchen & living room done in plank vinyl! Super easy to clean and looks like real wood. However with any material you get what you pay for, the more high end stuff looks and feels better.

I love wood and always have it throughout my home. However, I NEVER put wood in bathrooms and kitchen. It WILL scratch and one heavy drop will require repair of wood flooring. I've used two other materials to blend and get the wood look; Amtico Vinyl wood look planks, very durable; and ceramic wood look tile. Good luck.
