Actually like cabinets....would change flooring to darker color that is in backsplash. Modernize hardware.

The cabinet style is fine. Consider having a professional paint them an espresso shade adding some new hardware. For the floor, consider an elongated ceramic tile that looks like wooden planks in a shade similar to the espresso used on the cabinets. Enjoy the new look!

I would not go dark in this small space but I would change the upper cabinets to glass doors, take the shelves off the end and just put a great tall glass piece in that spot, I think the cabinets are a good style but painting them pale gray would change them for sure and with the stainless would have a cohesive feel. I would for sure buy a counter depth fridge it will make this space feel alot bigger

I'd love a counter depth refrigerator, but they way they built the spot, I only have about 34 inches wide. If I go too small, I loose too much internal space. Right now about 22. If you have ideas, I'd love to hear them, but I was not able to find one.

Counter depth fridges are really not smaller inside but when you install them you will be surprised how much bigger your space looks. A tall glass piece is something like a vase or just a really amazing piece of blown glass with color.Do you have actual cabinets on the other side of the fridge or just a panel?

Grey tones or greige tones (grey/beige tones) can be good candidates in either stain or paints...in smaller spaces, it would be nice to put a darker color on the base cabinets and a complimentary lighter color on the wall cabinets.

Using a slab door style with a stain finish like Rockport Gray Wash on the wall cabinets and Peppercorn Gray Wash on the base and utility cabinets, along with a sleek stainless door pull would be stunning. This would all fit well with your existing back splash tile, counter top and stainless appliances.

All of these finishes and door styles are available for refacing.

Personal preference on color, but I think a darker color even as dark as espresso would look great in your space. Your kitchen is not fully enclosed. I would add some sleek hardware. You could do a clean look with backsplash with lighter color (tile or a glass). You could remove end shelves for more open space. Depending on how much cabinet space you DO have, I would consider removing cabinet above sink, maybe putting in two floating shelves up higher. Might open things up, place to put colorful accents pieces, not feel so closed in while at sink. Consider porcelain tile on floor?

I'd go with a shaker style door, this includes just a flat recessed panel. That with a dark stain and maybe some nice glass in some top doors would be a cool way to go!

I think if you restain or paint the doors a dark espresso that will update the style enough. Also, a tile that picks up more of the grays in your backsplash would pull those together.

Hi there @gerst001 - I see you are now tackling your kitchen! I also don't mind the cabinets. Your kitchen reminds me of a small update we did a couple of years ago. We changed the hardware and backsplash and it made a huge difference. The backsplash was actually stainless steel tiles with adhesive so we didn't have to remove existing backsplash.

Hi Rebecca! My wife does not mind the cabinets, I HATE them. Either going to do slab door or shaker doors (thoughts?). We love the backsplash we have (my wife is not into subway tiles or anything shinny). I am leaning towards a dark stain, white, or light gray for the cabinets and new tile floor as well.

In that case, I would opt for slab door in medium to dark grey. Will work nicely with your living room and accent wall:)

When I redid my kitchen I rearranged of some of my existing cabinets, and I also added new features like pull out drawers in my lower cabinets. My old cabinets were nice solid wood that were very expensive when new in the mid eighties. I had a professional painter re-paint my old cabinets with a sherwin williams paint especially for cabinets. It's very hard paint and still looks perfect after three years - no chips so far, and they clean up easy. I went with a light enamel in a satin finish. I changed my pulls too.

Unless you are left handed I suggest flipping the fridge across the room, then installing the dishwasher to the right of the sink. Your kitchen would look much better if the DW didn't look like it was annexed onto the stove.

The reason I clicked on this post was because the shape and size of your kitchen is nearly identical to one I have in a small vacation home. I haven't begun construction yet, so I still have options open. When I redesigned mine I swapped the fridge to the other side and placed a dishwasher next to the sink, my sink is not at an angle, and a little further to the right. My sink and range were already where yours are located. I'm leaning towards a very light gray enamel in this kitchen with either a charcoal gray or carrara marble countertop.

Like others have suggested, replacing some doors with glass would be a big help. It adds depth and helps lighten the upper cabinets. Sometimes they can remove the center panel and replace it with glass, but I had to have new doors made. I think changing the ones on either side of the microwave, and the angled one over the sink.

PS: Have you considered adding a panel or crown moulding to cover that small space above your cabinets. Are you planning to change paint colors in the adjoining room?

Shaker style cabinets are very modern but not TOO contemporary.
