Carolyn... Can you provide a specific example? I need to pick three fixture for my basement and have chosen a wood for the "eye-catching" piece, but don't know which/how to bring in the metal?

Pendant / chandelier # 1 and entry into basement is semi flush mount fixture

Are you wanting chandeliers or medium sized pendants? I'm sorry but I'm just not understanding what kind of fixtures you're seeking. In a living space I might use a track light or recessed lights. Same in basement, track lights or recessed. One thing I always watch out for in any fixture is a bowl type fixture with no hole at the bottom. Bugs can die and collect there and you don't want to have to get up on a ladder once a wk. to clean them out.

I like these fixtures, but don't know if that's the sort of thing you're looking for. Photos of the areas where they are going would be quite helpful.

Sorry Carolyn, let me provide more details...

We are finishing the basement area as a hang out space for our daughter (11 years old) so that she has somewhere to hang out with her friends, be away from us, but still under the watchful eye of us. And it will be a semi-man cave for football season.

I have attached the layout of the basement area. There are three distinct areas - bar space, homework space, and conversation / TV space. Eventually a pool table will go into the big open space in front of the bar area, but that is well into the future.

I have 18 recessed lights installed around the space, but I want to add ceiling light fixtures to allow another option, since I personally do not like recessed (even on a dimmer).

I need three fixtures:
- A smaller flush mount for at the bottom of the stairs (14" wide at most)
- A drum pendant for over the conversation area (24" wide at most with a 20" drop at most)
- A "funner" small chandelier for over the homework table (18" wide at most with a 18" drop at most). This is where I have a wood-like fixture in mind.

I go back and forth on what to do with the fixtures. The walls are SW Olympus White and there are 4 windows and a sliding door, so plenty of light in the space. I was hoping to go with shiny chrome, but I keep getting drawn to the styles available in ORB.

Thanks for all the info, tho I still need a little more. What is the ceiling height? Is the furniture going to be contemporary or what? By drop do you mean the height of the fixture itself, or the maximum ht. from the ceiling when installed?

Also, what is that in the bottom left corner? I see the seating area and a round table, but can't tell what's in that corner. Is the study area at the round table? And if not, then where.

The ceiling height is 9 feet everywhere except over the homework table, where it is a tad under 8 feet due to the HVAC runs.

Drop = maximum distance that the fixture hangs from the ceiling when installed.

The study area is the round table with the four chairs around it. The area in the bottom left is the bar area. There is a bank of cupboards with a beverage fridge. The little white table there is a pub top table since there is built in bench seating along the walls.
