Ok, backsplash is stone. See picture of wrapped-in-cellophane sample. The area is not too big and one worker wants to charge me $550 for labor. I wonder if that's fair or too much.

The tile setters that we use have a minimum charge for backsplashes regardless of size and then it goes up from there depending upon features and size. They have to set the tile, leave and come back the next day (or very late on the same day) in order to grout the tile and then with a stone they have to come back again to seal the tile once the grout has thoroughly dried. A lot of trips for a small space so it costs more.

There are many variables... Material selection, installation cost associated with materials selected, and necessary prep needed to prepare area prior to tiling. Best to find a local professional in your area and they should be able help you with this. Hope this helps and Happy Renovating!

When a client asks me that question, the standard answer I give them is $25.00 s/f. $12.00 for the install and $13.00 for the material. If your installer is charging you $550.00 then you should only have 42s/f of wall to cover. Remember all areas of the country are different. im in phoenix

Square footage has nothing to do with a small job. It's all about the trips and time and how that screws up doing other day jobs for them. The quoted charge is very reasonable for the work involved. Low even. He's only charging for a half day sounds like, when he actually should be charging for two half days.
