The other side is a smaller 'play room' with a chalkboard painted wall for the homeowners kids to draw on. It is large enough to fit a few comfy beanbags and a couple of toys.

This built-in was custom designed and built by our carpenters the 'door' has hinges on the left and is supported by a 'castor wheel' underneath on the right. One would simply push and swing the door open - there are no knobs to turn.

You can also use a pivot hinge http://www.hardwaresource.com/hinges/DOOR+HINGES/Pivot+Hinges+-+Pivot+Sets/ and attach the base board to the door

Loved this idea. Wanted to use it when expanding room into adjoining garage.
