Diane, I believe that your counterspace could be increased substantially by (partially) removing the half wall and the raised counter, and creating a 1' overhang on the other side of the modified half wall. which would allow the counter in that area to be as deep as 40" when not serving others--the eating bar portion may need to be sloped to the opening for the adjacent room. There are some other nice ideas, like removing the soffit above the cabs although that is largely cosmetic, unless you like dust bunnies, are taller than I so you can dust easily, or want additional storage and can afford it.

If you can live with the rest of the kitchen functionally, this would be as simple as rebuilding the counter in one area, and replacing the counter surface in the adjacent areas. If the area allows, you could also extend the counter overhang 12" in the direction of the table, which would give you one additional placesetting, if not too crowded. Allow yourself 4' min. btw. the extended counter and the table edge--tight but workable. Happy Houzzing.
