if you dont use the fireplace, i would remove it. it looks really good! except you need to transfer some color to the tv side of the room. and i dont think the large vase of flower works, as the picture frames seem small beside it. Ottoman, with tray is needed. and i would get an end table with a lamp and get rid of the plant and vase on the floor. if you keep the fireplace, just paint it white and add some molding and board to the top to give it a more built in finished look. i would add one larger picture frame to where the group of 3 small are on the right. dont worry about going lower. I might put a mirror resting on the wall over the fire place. not sure about the tv wall as we cant really see it.

I would recommend removing the area rug, it's not really adding anything to the space and just appears as a big white square in the middle of your beautiful hardwood. If you really like the carpet find something with the blues and yellow tones . A small table or two small tables would help make this area more cozy and hopefully not interfere with traffic flow in front of the tv cabinet. I would also recommend you paint the fireplace as it looks a bit dated as is. Add a great piece of art (to the wall where your family photos are ) that incorporates some of the blue and yellow tones in your sofa and cushions. Your family photos could be added to another area of the home but I'd suggest you reduce some of the spacing between photos if you do re hang them to make it more like a gallery. Add some interesting items to the top of your fireplace some nice vases in the blue colour maybe a candle or two and anything you find interesting ! I would also add an end table and lamp and probably repurpose the overhead light it looks more suited to being over a dining table Have fun!

Thanks for the great ideas everyone, I like the ideas of the side table and lamp, reducing the spacing on the frames or adding a larger frame to the right side, repainting the fireplace (hate the colour) would like to put some stone work instead. I'd also like to move the fixture and put a nice ceiling fan. Also I will move the vase and add some blue and yellow tones over the fireplace and a blue yellow rug. Wish me luck, will add new pics once I rearrange.

I would rework the mantel and that whole far wall.

the room isnt that large, if you go to a fan, stay to about 44 inches... if anything i would put up a nice flush mount, unless you need a fan.

Is that an actual FP or a plug-in portable one? if it can be moved, I'd put it in the master bedroom and move the TV to that end wall, sectional opposite the window with a pair of swivel chairs in the window. Urns, vases and pots I'd remove and I'd replace the rug with some color and pattern.

The room looks a a bit full. Try placing the rug under the first two feet of the sectional, about six inches in. It will make the room feel a little larger and show off more of the hardwood floors.
