Interior Design Second Career Advice

I apologize that this isn’t a typical design question, but I have a major life decision on my hands, and am hoping to gain some insight from this amazing network of design professionals. I’ve recently decided to make a career move into the field of interior design after spending the past three years working in corporate accounting. I’ve had a strong passion for design for as long as I can remember and couldn’t be more excited to enter the profession, but want to be sure I go about it in the best way possible. My initial plan was to jump right into an accredited degree program, but I live in the South Florida area, and the program options are limited. I’ve looked into the Art Institute in Miami but the cost is much higher than typical programs, so I want to be sure it’s a valuable investment. I’ve also considered working in the field in some capacity while taking non-credit courses or entering a certificate program to gain some practical experience before beginning a formal education.
I would love your advice on the best route for someone entering the field. Is gaining work experience beforehand a smart decision? What are the best types of work experiences to gain? Is it better to get started in a degree program sooner rather than later? Is the Miami Art Institute (or the Art Institute network of schools as a whole) reputable?
Thank you so much for your input!
