wall panel proportions

I want to renovate my living room with wall panels - not floor-to-ceiling wooden, like Tudor or Jacobean ones, but the ones that have plaster mouldig or wooden beading. Are there any rules for how they should fit the spacel, such as how far they should be from th edges of the walls? Is any space too small to have one, such as above the door? I'd welcome any advice that people can offer; perhaps people have used a contrasting texture inside the panel, but kept the colour the same, or vice-versa. Any thoughts?

I've trawled google images, to no avail! The nearest I can get is similar to this, but with no dado rail, ie the panels going down towards the skirting board. Also, I would have fewer, larger panels that are not so tight to the picture rail (which the room in the picture doesn't have).

The general rule is, what is most pleasing to the eye, while relating to the space. Take into account doors and windows, and other features of the room -- you want it to look like it was designed from the start rather than added on. Several pictures of the room would allow more specific advise.

You could use blue or green masking tape to try a layout or 3 on the wall to get an idea for proportion. Small spaces should have it if there is room.

I really like the idea of a contrasting texture but with the same color.
