Do you mean you don't want to see a lot of the face frame? The gap between pair doors shouldn't be more than an 1/8th of an inch anyway. But overlay is this; if there is an opening for a door at 17'' and you have a 1/2'' overlay the door is 18''.

They can't touch or you will not be able to open and close doors without scraping them causing damage. If the cabinets are face framed, then the most I am aware of you can get is a 3/4 overlay unless some new hinges have come onto the market in recent months.

With the most interesting man in the world look I'm sure you will figure out the right way to go about this though. The doors might even adjust themselves and open when you ask!

I would recommend you look at Frameless or Full-Access cabinet construction vs. the traditional Framed construction. With Full-Access cabinets there is a tighter reveal of 2mm or 1/16" which will help you achieve the look you are requesting. With Framed construction the largest overlay will still leave you with a 1/4" reveal.
