What an interesting space you have! Here are a few examples of how we've spiced up some similar, slightly awkward spots.

What a nice room! I like Betsy's white floating shelf idea. How about about floating shelves to the right of the door way and a small console to the left to act as a mini cocktail bar?

Maybe something like this from West Elm:

Terrific space for display collectables or plants. I would place a larger plant in the corner and hang a few shelves (like the ones that match you decor in the room). Display books, candles or family pictures.

I would definitely go with a console table (add extra seating underneath), chest (if you need storage) or bar height tray table. Be sure to add a lamp on top and hang art or even a mirror. I agree with whoever said the bookcase is too short. Not a fan of floating shelves in a formal space.

I di agree on the sofa table but under the picture and add a lamp--don't see any other lighting in the room. I would look for maybe orange to carry out the color in the pillows? Also, I would put the 2 accent chairs together straight --as in not in an angle which they are placed right now. With the sofa table under the picture you can make it a whole vingette -- go with ottomans or a basket underneathe. Or if you want to turn that area into a mini bar? So instead of a sofa table you can look into Pottery Barns look with their version of a mini bar. If you have small children though --you may want to go with baskets or ottomans w. storage for all the small toys!And on the walls leading into the other room it might be dramatic to instead hang 2 sconce lights that have scrollwork down the wall-- say about 24-30" long. Hope you know what I am talking about. They have the metal work below and then a glass sconce lighting on the top--check light fixture site.

I think a bookshelves for books, collectibles and plants would be good..make your own!

Maureen - I love the idea, but not sure it will work...The space between the chairs (I just straightened them) and the wall is small. Perhaps it appears larger in the picture. If I put something against the wall by the picture there is barely space to squeeze by.

I was wondereing how the room would look if you put the sofa on the other end of the room where the chairs are now? then you could put a sofa able behind--giving more interest in the room. And I do agree with the others that the one shelf is too small. Maybe to fix tht one problem you could either get two -one on ea wall and add longer pictures above? Oherwise you could put a large vase with tall curly willow in that empty corner?

It looks "empty" because that picture is all by itself, floating on a huge wall.

A full-height bookshelf and display/storage unit on the short wall and a lot more art on the wall next to the short wall.

OR: wrap a gallery wall of photos and art around that corner and have a small but really interesting short cabinet or corner artwork.

I would like to add art to that wall but I am not sure how to pick art that coordinates and how to arrange.

Would it be possible to move the whole sitting area up towards the other end of the room leaving space under the window for a narrow table against the wall with a couple of chairs either side that could be used for meals or as a study/computer desk. Perhaps with a simple but largish pendant light that ties in with the decor in the seating area which adds interest and atmosphere at night

Jessrose ... Art is easy. Pick what you like, frame it so the mat makes the art look great and start hanging. You can also hang fabric you like, stretched over blank canvas, rugs, small quilts ... whatever.

As for spacing, you can go formal with equal frames, spaced equally in a line or square, or informal with several sizes of frames, hanging however they happen to fit.

Test the spacing with sheets of paper taped to the wall until you like it, then mark and hang.

You have great style in that room already. It is modern and clean, so I'd keep going. I love the orange idea. On either side of the entrance put two small matching tables, painted orange, two lamps on top and two mirrors hung above. The mirrors will reflect the light from the front window during the day, and the lamps at night. Add a plant or two and your done!

Jessrose--If you are going to go with more art on the wall that the big blue picture is hanging-I think you might want to be symetrical--easier than trying to balance the sizes. Maybe a total of 4 pieces -2 on each side that would be at least 8x10or larger. Then you would be making a statement and helping the artwork being all by itself--like someone said"floating".

On top of each other--how large is your original blue artwork?

this is a great room as is but just 2 different suggestions: the 1st is to add a little greenery to the corners with different large pots with similar colors but with slightly different plants kept to the same height or lower to the doorway's height ... the 2nd choice that I thought of first was to add curved corner shelves in slate or black to pick up the round shape of your coffee table and to break up the squareness of the room ...this may add an extra dimension to the doorway leading into your other room. I know I've seen this type of rounded tall corner shelves on-line but I can't remember where...sorry. good luck, it really is a nice room.

Serrtjw"s comment had the hayneedle.com web site--but i would get white so it doesn't take over the whole room and make that side too weighted. you might want to think about either getting some orange pottery pieces or paint the back of the bookcase orange?

I found the bookshelves I was thinking about "corner spacesaver bookcase" @ Target for $41.99 but they don't come in black or slate...Target also has a "5 shelf corner bookcase" in espresso for $64.89 that are less arty but might work. glasscornershelvesstore.com has some cool glass shelves that come in different depths and would tie in with your coffee table - they have a picture on their website to give you an idea but...I think they have to be mounted so wouldn't be as flexible to change as the bookshelves.

It is difficult to get a true idea of the floor size and shape but I wondered if the sofa and chairs could be configured into more of an L shape with perhaps the sofa facing and centered on the fireplace and the chairs with their backs to the doorway through to the other sitting area ( or vice versa) and one of the small tables at the angle between chairs and sofa. This may work better with a lower, square or oblong coffee table enclosed by the L rather than the higher round table. If this worked it would open the seating up to the fire and the windows. If there is no picture over the fireplace I would move the picture there and carry one of the blues from it in the form of some retro blue highlights into a couple of cushions or lampshade, lamps, books etc. perhaps a plain wooden standard lamp with a retro patterned ( or plain) basic fabric lampshade in the corner to the left of the opening through to the lounge would give a cosy feel at night and add interest.

I don't think you need more furniture in this room. It looks done to me. I do like the bookshelves suggestion by Dytecture and also think a tree would look great as Betsy suggested. I don't know why I didn't think of this BUT a water feature is beautiful, cleans the air and is sooooooooo restful. There are many versions inexpensive BUT this is one of my favorite,( Sorry, I don't know how to make a hyperlink!)
