Here in NM they are both needed.

In Kentucky the humidity and the heat make both a necessity in my mind.

The noise of a fan drives me crazy. I'd go with AC for me. Also...fans scare our cat for some reason. ;)

Coming from someone who sleeps with a portable hair dryer on a stand next to her bed, for just the noise alone, lol lol, I love the fans!!!!!!!!!!

Both are necessary in the home. Central air is good for those days that are extremely hot, but its nice to have a natural breeze and to just work off of the air that is currently in the room. I personally, don't like sleeping with the air conditioning blowing directly on my, but I love the air from a ceiling fan. They both have their advantages!

Ceiling fans, even with summer highs frequently over 100ºF. I can't stand living in a closed house or sleeping in a closed room.

A good quality ceiling fan shouldn't make a sound.

We're in SoCal and have both. Ceiling fans are in bedrooms and kitchen eating area. We always turn off the ac at night...don't really need it since the ceiling fans are enough.

Definitely both. I prefer not to use the A/C, but having it is sometimes necessary.

I use both. I prefer open windows with ceiling fans. But that is not always possible here with plus 90 degree temps and high humidity.
