Niche! Thank you, I couldn't think of the word for it. Great ideas! I have to add one complication is that I have 2 toddlers so I cannot put anything in the niche that is breakable.

If you like the mirrors keep them, if not remove them. This should be about your taste.

Good idea to paint like 104 Shore Oaks above. Child centered theme, modern, a scene or whatever you like. Even photos could be attached to the space. All of that could be done over the mirror without removing it.

St. Armands residence is attractive also. Could use some rustic and child friendly pieces for that.

In addition to glue there are nails, screws and other anchors!

Drywall over them. Niches tend to be over used for ''architectural interest''. Emphasis on quotes.

The other thought I'm having is to use a vinyl or PVC peel and stick tile that looks metallic and tile just the back of the niche. Then, adding some plants in a wood box or planter. Here is an idea of what that looks like, though I'm not sure what color:

Um, no. Lipstick on a pig doesn't improve the pig's appearance. It just annoys the pig. 86 them entirely.

I would get rid of them one way or another. I don't see how you can incorporate niches into a rustic look so I would drywall over them as Sophie suggested so you'll have a full on wall you can use.
