Love the choice for the couch and think it will be great with the wall color and carpet, too.

Have the couch face the window, as in this pic, but not angled. The chair can stay where it is and it makes a great conversation area this way, too. The art on the wall where the couch will go will need to be lots bigger and lower. Choose your accent colors and then find the art and pillows to tie it all in together.

Thanks Abbyjean, this is actually the staged pic from before I purchased the house. I am starting with a clean slate. :) I need a new couch for this room, just not sure what size. I think this one is too long (at its standard size) and so I'm looking into smaller "apartment" sized options. See the attached layout for room dimensions.

I thought about that Deco! If I put the sofa on the wall facing the windows, it would also help me section off the "foyer" from what I'm referring to as the conversation room (hate formal living rooms :)) But I always thought the coffee table then poses a strange issue. It can't be centered and it needs to be extra small- or maybe I go without one which is never a bad idea when toddlers are involved.

thanks CL Interiors- which wall would the sofa go on? One wall is 127" and the other is 117". On the longer wall (the one facing the windows), this would leave 22.5" on each side of the sofa. Is that enough for end tables or should I just forgo one end table?

I like that term "conversation area"! how about 4 chairs around an ottoman, and then a round foyer table in the corner nook with a vase of flowers on it. I think that would make a lovely entrance to your home.

With the limited space, I would do a floor lamp in the corner, and a narrow rectangular table on the other end of the sofa. Symmetry is wonderful but you don't always have to have it. Thanks Marlene, I think I prefer the "coziness" of a sofa. Then as many people that can fit can squeeze in and make the most of the seating- seems like a lot of space gets lost with "chair only" setups.

I am not usually a fan of a sectional, but I like the one that deco is suggesting......many things about it.......helps block off the foyer, which is nice, the right size and the chaise can move AND a sectional with a chaise is soooo comfy cozy with little ones for reading stories and snuggling for naps.

I agree that a floor lamp on one side and a small table on the other side will work. The floor lamp would not need the same amount of space, so that might mean the table could be a bit larger, too. Maybe even a round one????

You're right, sofas do provide the most seating if everybody squishes in, but not always the best for conversation, so that's the direction I was going. I was thinking a small sofa would seat three comfortably, and then a chair 1, so thought 4 chairs facing each other would be equivalent. You know what works best for your family and I think a sectional like deco suggested would look very nice in your room.

Something like the coffee table in this photo would work great for you since rooms for end tables might be a concern. A floor lamp could be used when you need extra lighting.

Another photo to show how to fit a sofa, two chairs and two stools in a small space. Probably not your style of furniture but just showing the small footprint of two chairs, and little ottomans would be great for kids.

Um Marlene, that is a Freakin gorgeous pic! Love that room! This is technically a formal living room adjacent to a cozy family room with a television so it's ok if it is a bit posh- that's what I wanted! But still live able and inviting of course

Glad you are going this route. I was going to suggest looks similar to the above yesterday. Combine a dark grey on couch on long wall with modern occasional chairs in leather or bright fabric that can be arranged to suit your room. It will interesting and modern, to suit the modern features of this room. Add a very large piece of modern art over couch and perahps use a large ottoman as your coffee table. I think the room in the second picture would be complimentary to a lot of other types of styles - it's not too modern. You can tone down the ultra modern chair for example and add something more traditional. But I like the set up of the room, the varied shapes and it not being matched.
