Anyone with inset carpet experience?

We are renovating our first floor, including a south-facing, window-endowed family room. I imagined we would use hardwood flooring with an area rug, but my husband feels strongly that he'd like carpet in the sitting area part of the room. He feels it is much cozier on your feet and more comfortable if you want to sit on the floor (we have 2 young kids). Also less expensive than putting in hardwood throughout and then buying a nice, large area rug though that's not the driving force. Not too concerned about resale value - we're not planning on moving. I've definitely warmed to the idea of a inset carpet with hardwood surround - I think it could look cool - but want to make sure we do it right. I want to make sure it fits with our sort of midcenturyish, clean lines, slightly Scandinavian but not overly modern with a teensy bit of industrial style. Attached photo is of the maple hardwood flooring we plan to use. I don't have a room photo because it's currently gutted. Family room built-in will be cherry I think. Any thoughts?
