The chest has an old world look to it whereas the mirror is very contemporary. I would put something with a dark frame up there instead of the mirror.

The mirror is perfect, but I'd lower it so that the bottom is about 4 inches from the top of the chest. Then organize accessories on a table with the tallest piece (either the two candlestick or the vase) is on the left and then balance that visual weight with a smaller "heavier" items down and towards the right. This feels natural because we read from left to right, so we read decor from left to right.

should I remove one of the tall pieces and put the ships decanter to the right.

Take away, either the vase or the two candlesticks then place the remaining piece to left. then place the decanter to the right. If you have a piece with more "visual weight" (something that is not as tall as the remaining tall piece(s) but taller than the decanter) you can place it to the right and place the decanter in between. That way the composition will be balanced.

Barbara Tabak- I got ya, I might just take away the decanter all together, I wanted to keep it there because its from my MIL brought it back from Germany, but I just think it looks lost, I am liking the way the black candle sticks pop, that's why I thought that I might need a different mirror. Thank you.

Mirrors are like art, they are personal;) I would remove everything from the chest except the candleholders and a have a mirror such as this;)

What an interesting and unique chest! A one-of-a-kind piece! I think you should choose a mirror that's in harmony with the finish on the chest, but doesn't compete with it in terms of style or drama. The chest has a lot of drama on its own and should be the focal point.

Something simple that draws off the bronze in the chest. Sometimes less is more and in this case, less is best.

Thos. Baker and Genevieve, now I'm really confused, I love the mirrors that Genevieve sent me especially the dark one, but the simple round one the Thos. Baker sent me makes sense. I also plan on painting that wall, which will make a difference in bringing out that area.

A round mirror is the best solution for the shape of the wall. The size also looks good, but, the mirror is placed too high above the chest. I would definitely change the mirror frame. I would recommend using a mirror framed in antique gold with brown glaze. Do not try to match the mirror frame with the chest, doing that would make the overall look disinteresting. There are also too many accessories on the top of the chest. A simple floral or natural leaf/berry arrangement would be sufficient. It would also add much needed color to the space.

I think the piece's shape has a lot of drama but its finish doesn't, at least on my monitor. The mirror Genevieve's posted "mirrors" and underscores its shape, which is intriguing, but the mirror is a bit out there. I keep going back to Margo's post. There's something about its warmth and tones that I think enhances the chest.

I think the style of mirror works, but something darker will work better. Look for something with more of a copper sheen. I love the chest though, it's well worth hunting down the perfect mirror.

Hi Diane -- It can be confusing having so many different opinions and options to think about. The beauty of Houzz is the broad range of designers that each bring their own expertise and ideas to the table. But, ultimately, it's about what you like, what you enjoy looking at and what you'll be happy living with. The mirrors Geneveive suggested are gorgeous, and as you can see, each mirror creates a different "look" or setting for your chest. Go with your personal preference and you'll be happy with the outcome!

As often happens I want to ask, so here goes: what else might be in the foyer, anything, what about style of ceiling lamp? What is your general style ...cause I can see some suggestions, I also see same idea with another color subtly mixed in, like teal [does that look good with warm bronze?], or green. ... I mean why not bring color in? More interesting!

Curved sides of chest sort of repeat in round mirror. Front reminds me of library, tall books, traditional. everdebz, I have attached a picture of the light fixtures and the dining room table that is in the same room as the chest, (its a little dark). The light fixtures are brushed nickle, other colors in the room are slate grey, taupe and red.

If you like this mirror you could hang it on the horizontal giving more proportion to the width of the cabinet

I like the mirror you have.
the pieces on top of the chest should be removed as they are a distraction to the chest and mirror which are yr focal points.
You could add a simple lamp and for colour you might add an orchid.

hmm... you mention red is there, so could red tapestry mirror could look good in between sconces - sort of bounce some more light around? course you did say art might go there. Maybe that interesting mirror with two finishes [last shown in Genevieve's] - do its shapes resemble the lower what are those architectural boxes called? molding... anyway, or how about the upper right mirror shown in ciscomo?
