Hi there. I know that insulation in the ceiling of a basement won't really help with floor-contact sound penetration, as that will transfer through the floor / joists / drywall. But what I'm struggling with is whether or not to put some standard R-19 Johns Manville insulation in the ceiling. I am going to be using Roxul Safe and Sound insulation in the basement bedroom ceiling, but I don't want to spend the money to do that throughout the entire basement. The Johns Manville insulation says that it has sound deadening properties, but I am a bit skeptical. I don't planning on going all-out for green glue / resilient channels / etc. I just wonder whether using standard insulation will make enough of a difference for air-borne sound penetration (i.e., music, movies) to make it worth spending the money -- or should I just drywall the ceiling and not worry about the insulation? I welcome the input from anyone who has before / after experience with this process. Thanks!
