I'm helping my young daughter decorate her apartment right now, and like you, she (wisely) chose neutral colors for her sofa, accent tables and chairs.

Now that the furniture is in place, what are your favorite colors? Are you willing to shop around the discount stores in your area (TJ Maxx, Marshall's, Target, Home Goods), or will you be shopping online?

I ask about your favorite colors because you've got a lot of black, and now you need to add color, in the form of throw pillows, curtains (do you have the standard apartment mini-blinds under your curtains?), possibly an area rug, and lamps.

And by the way, congratulations on your new apartment!

I have boys, Lots and lots of boys (5)! and they all like the same thing- a big leather sectional and a flat screen TV, preferably hung up. Like FL said, you need stuff. I suggest you hit up Craigslist and garage sales and find things that appeal to you. My one son who is the most decor conscious likes bar art (think of promotional things a beer or alcohol company might give away- nice stuff though, nothing cheap or tacky). He also likes movie poster framed art and mirrors. The big thing is to keep the colors within a chose palette if you want it to look really good. Try to find an area rug that has a pattern and colors that you really like and go from there. Look on Overstock. They have thousands of rugs. Try not to choose one that is just brown and beige. If you pick a rug that is lets say brown, beige, black and blue. Try to have at least one color that's not bland in the mix. Then you can use all those colors in the room and it will give you a cohesive look. A rug, complementary throw pillows and better curtains would go a long way to making your place look good. We used 1.5 inch thick black bamboo rods for curtain rods for his place just sitting on top of simple curved wooden bracket that you can get at home depot or similar places. Hang your rod at least 6 inches higher and get longer curtains with more width to them so they hang fuller.

How much money do you have to spend?

Time to head out shopping for a few things. Target, World Market, etc. I would add an off white shag rug to lift the sofa some. Then some new curtain panels. If possible switch out coffee table to something you can put your feet up on, rattan storage ottoman maybe.

Art for walls can be many things: baskets, photos, albums, etc.

A colorful rug (go as large as possible!) would add a lot of life to the room. Pier One, etc. for a few pillows. Check out furniture consignment stores where you can get great deals.

If you can find curtain panels and maybe a bamboo shade also for the window that would be a good starting point:

Can you post a few more shots from all corners? I assume you can't paint.

For art, something that speaks to you is best. What are your hobbies or interests?

Or you can make something interesting out of different color cork squares (craft store).

Did not expect this feed back but it's all great! Well yes, I did just move in. I have been there a couple of months now and I am tired of coming home to plain walls. So I was looking online for tips and came across this app. I work a 12 hour shifts for the sheriffs department and really do not feel like decorating during my work weeks. This is my second apartment iv had but I want it to be completely different from the last. I'm looking for a modern look. For sure i want some paintings to go on the walls and my kitchen table is on it's way. The kitchen table is an accent to the living room coffee tables. Thank you all

evrtt09: do a search, see the top for Photos? then search for black leather sofa and you'll get ideas for decorating around your sofa; then click on the pic and hover and you can "save" in the Ideabook which will be your online place for saving your fav ideas.

Spend quite some time doing this for a while until you get an idea of color palette, etc. that you like. Eventually, you'll probably notice a trend of what you like. Either very modern, maybe some green/organic, who knows. Everyone is different.

After you think you have a trend, then the designers can assist you in making specific recommendations. Reason I say this, is that I've changed my mind a lot over the past few months and finally narrowed it down. You have a good start w/your furniture, so now you will move forward with style preferences and color, accessories, etc.

Can you paint the walls or not? Wall paint usually comes after furniture, art and rugs.

Pillows and accessories are budget-friendly ways to change things up and can easily be changed out down the road. You also don't need a ton of art, but maybe two or three pieces which really speak to you. Also spend some time here looking at art and there are other websites like art.com to look at as well. Even objects can be art. Take your time and no reason to rush into things.

That looks amazing! I will definitely give this a go. Everyone's feedback is just priceless as well. Thanks a ton.
Ok Grover, do something to that door, as it bothers me. The rest, as usual looks great.
I'll work on it, pcmom1, but remember, it's an apartment. So painting or replacing is out.

Over the door hook for a coat? Velcro on some molding? Museum putty up a message board? Needs something.

It's tough picking out art for a 23 year old guy. Let's hear what he likes in the way of colors and style.
