Dark Blue Grasscloth faded at the seams during install

Hi! My designer chose a beautiful dark blue grasscloth for our dining room. During the install, the wallpaper lady said that the cloth was not "color fast" - it was bleeding on her hands as she installed. The color really faded at the seams, especially as she used the smoothing tool with her right hand. I expected to see the seams, but didn't expect the color fading. Is this normal? My designer says it's to be expected, and that if she were left-handed, you would see it to the left of the seams. True?

Well, your designer should have told you that possibility up front!! If she had, would you have still chosen that wallpaper? This would drive me crazy! Just knowing the seam would show would have stopped me. Do you plan on living with this?

Considering living with it. Photo actually looks a little worse than in person. Expense of redoing is having us question how much it really bothers us! ;)

Fabrics, wallpapers and even rugs experience dying defects. I would contact the manufacturer and provide a photo and would ask for reimbursement or replacement (ensure it has a different dye lot number!). Your designer should help as well, if she/he purchased on your behalf. Dye should not be coming off and if you look at grasscloth pictures on Houzz, they aren't faded. Wallpaper is not inexpensive and you will never be happy with it the way that it is. houzz=

Great photo, Maureen. Thanks for the advice! My plan is to have the designer work with the Wallpaper supply store and share the photo with the manufacturer.

The wallpaper is not defective yes the dye's used are not colorfast, if they get wet they bleed. That is NOT the case here. That is exactly how it's supposed to look I have hung this paper many times it is as they say the nature of the material. The problem here is not the installers or even the manufacturers, it is the designer. She failed to educate you on the "look" of this type of grasscloth (grasscloth varies in appearance depending on type) and then even worse she really failed when she threw the installer under the bus! This is typical of an inexperienced or unqualified, uncredentialed designer. The photo below is one of MANY installs I've done with this type of grasscloth.

Here's the same material being hung prior to double cutting seam, notice the shading is caused more as an effect of lighting, below that we shaded (matched) sheets prior to being hung. Final photo is of the finished install. Other colors of grasscloth will do this too. Depends mostly on fiber and weave. This is not the same effect as shading, light/dark or paneling. Often it has to be reverse hung to minimize paneling. Clients are always informed prior to install
