Need advice for my dark, drab living room

I moved into my husband's apartment and inherited much of his bachelor furniture, which unfortunately is not in the budget to be changed right now. But I want things to be cheerful! The biggest challenge in the living room is the lack of much light. There is only one window for a relatively long room, and it doesn't even get that much sun! And unfortunately the sofas an armchair don't do any favors in that regard, but like I said, I need to work around what we own. So, I was hoping to choose a new area rug, curtains, throw pillows, and perhaps a side table, to brighten up the space. I am also open to some floor lamp suggestions, with a style that is modern but not too edgy and perhaps ever so slightly whimsical without being too super-funky. Walls are white (and that isn't going to change, since we rent...) I have attached a representative photo of our two large sofas (a 3-seat and a 2-seat) which are in from Crate and Barrel (the model is Axis 2) -- they are microfiber in the "coffee" color but in our space they look much darker than the photo online! We also have a dark gray-brown armchair, photo attached of what I think might be the right color? (in our space it appears a bit grayer). I also attached photos of our coffee table, which is in walnut veneer. Lastly, I attached a photo of our tv stand which really really isn't my personal style, but hey, I'm stuck with it for now. (Not saying it wouldn't work in someone else's home, not trying to offend anyone, it just isn't the aesthetic I am going for.) We currently have a taupe rug and it is fine but doesn't really DO anything for the room. And the curtains are a kind of bronze color that likewise doesn't add anything. What would be a good color (or colors) to really brighten things up and make it more lively? I was wondering about lemon yellow or teal or an apple or lime green. Any thoughts on colors and/or recommendations of particular pieces would be great! I would love to start with a color scheme and then I can find a bright area rug that has a subtle pattern but nothing too wild or bold (I prefer to let the color, rather than pattern, do the talking!) and then build on that with curtains and throw pillows. Help, please!! I would be so appreciative of any advice!
