I'm thinking through that arch way facing the outside side of the house, To the left of the front door. The other option is having a break made in the fence, and having the the door into the house behind the gate.

Front View of our home Thank you Susan Sutherlin but i actually didnt explain myself properly . The Granny Flat is the whole right side of the house ( where the front door is ajar and the small doorbell is on the wall . The entrance has to be on the front porch so that it is separate from my entry/ hallway . It would mean that the house has 2 separate entrances but both on the front landing / porch ... we just need to design something so that 'this' door is hidden from front view .

I think I'm a little confused as to where the granny flat is in relation to the house. Is it a part of the main structure? And if so where? Or around the back?

Hi ambersarris ! Im sorry , i think i have confused everyone . The flat is to the right side of the house , the 3 windows to the right are part of the flat . The entrance is around the side now but we wish to make a front entrance without destroying the facade of our home . My parents will be moving in and we want to retain privacy for all of us by creating a separate door for them .

If you put a door on the right hand wall in the entryway and painted it the same colour as the house it would loose prominence and would hardly be seen.

That was one of our solutions .... we were also thinking of adding wrought iron doors at the front of the arch and hopefully add to the french provincial look of the house ... this would cover the new door .

A custom wrought iron gate could look good with the style of your house. Especially considering the upstairs balconies have wrought iron balustrades. Because the existing balustrades are very simple in their designs it would be ideal to use a design that incorporates a lot of linear lines amongst the swirls to tie it in (see pic below).


I don't think the door would be an eyesore if it was in the same colour as the wall though (I assume this is what you're concerned about?) and if you did it in the same wood as the other door then a wrought iron gate won't hide it from view.
