Length / height of console table for large couch

Does anyone know any rules of thumb about how long your console table should be compared to the length of the couch?

I have a large sofa with chaise with a very long back (90" approx) and a low back height of 28 1/4" with pillow cushions sitting about 7" higher and I don't know how long/high a table should be with regard to the couch.

One idea is to have the table as long as the back; as high as the frame; make it an interesting grouping; not a fan of looking at the back of a sofa.

You can also do two shorter matching sofa tables, end to end. Also, I was just online shopping for sofa tables the other day and Crate and Barrel carries this 84" sofa table (Silviano). I love it but it's pricey.

Sandy - you had said " Length should be 3/4 of or equal to the length of the back section. " Do you mean 3/4 of the frame (starts and ends at the inner sofa arms) or the entire length of the sofa -- from the end of the outer arm to outer arm. (Hope that makes sense).

We are aiming for a modern/transitional look that leans toward mid-century, comfortable west coast...I like CB2's Mill Console Table.

P.S. The couch back frame measures 76" (excludes the arms). From end to end including the arms, it measures just over 90".

We have an open concept home with the living / dining being one very large rectangular room divided in half, with the couch back facing the dining area. We have a large kitchen that opens to both rooms.

I don't think this console is right for the back of your sectional...too light weight in style.

I agree with JudyG. With a sofa this large and chunky, you should remember "scale" and find a console a little thicker that will "own" the space behind the sofa. It can still be clean and sleek, but thicker.

Find one that fits on the frame of the sofa and does not go out on to the arms since the arms drop down. Viewing from the front, you do not want to see the console spilling over behind the arms. Make sense? 70+'" consoles are common and you could shoot for that length.

The table you like, above, is the minimum length....you want the console to fill most of the back of the sofa. Also, do not use a really skinny table - top should be at least 10" deep - for things like lamps, accessories. It is also less likely to tip over [have had that happen!]. Looks skimpy, cheap, as well.

Use Yahoo to google "long console tables" to see tons of them. If you add "images" to the search box, you will get a link to tons of pictures, like I did below. Click on the ones you want more info on to get dimensions, manufacturer, and cost. Examples below illustrate consoles behind sofas - nice sizes and finishing. I know all of them are not your style, but show stuff anyway. . .

Here are some consoles that are more substantial.

First one is 77" long, by "designsbystudio.com.

Second one is 71" long, black top, natural legs, named "Wood Dayo Long Console" by Campania International. Hover over this one to get the full picture.

Both found on Yahoo, " long console table images".

No but what sandy is suggesting sounds about right. I learned the hard way trying to put something too small behind mine to now almost completely covering the back frame and the scale is much better. Pretty sofa you have. Yeah I personally don't like the skinny leg sofa tables but you have to like it and depends what else is going on in room and what you will have on it. I like these.

mlosc I realize some of the suggestions I made are too tall but just ideas. Not sure how handy you are but you do a simple DIY bookcase type in the size and color you want. I had a low bockcase style one I saved on pintrest but can't find it. I'll post if I come across it.

If you can't find a long enough console table how about one that you like and put two chairs on either side...after all it is facing the dining room.

@MaWizz where did you find the console tables on the last pic from 2/25/17?

need a console table. couch is 120 in long and ~31 in high. it is hard to find a table 3/4 the length of the table, which is what is recommended. will it look tacky to have 72in?

Why not use TWO identical 48" wide sofa tables.

HU-70359369- did you ever find a piece for

the back of your sofa? I have the same dilemma. I have 115” inches of the back of my sofa. I’m wondering if 70” or 72” behind the sofa will look funny.

I have this sofa table and am wondering if the sofa I’m interested in would look odd if the height lands between the backside and top of the cushions. Thoughts?

    @annette also curious to know

    And me 😜

Did any of you go with a console table with a height between the top of the frame and the top of the back cushion? I'm debating that as well right now.

Wondering what you came up with. Please show a pic if you’re happy with your choice. I just ordered a table exactly same height you described. I’ve seen a lot of examples that I liked showing that height. Also wondering if I can get away with 22 in stools with 30 in table? I know that breaks the rules. I want the barstool to sit up as high as possible to look over the person sitting in the sofa.

I went with a sofa table that is almost the exact same length as my sofa, and one inch shorter

Annette, where did you find this console table? I love it!

@Annette, Love your space and especially your whole-house wall color. Do you happen to know the name of the paint?

The sofa table is from Crate & Barrel and the wall color is White Dove. It is a great neutral to warm white that doesn’t really lean too warm or too cool
