POLL: Which is your side of the bed?

last modified: 11 years ago
People sometimes stake claims to their side of the bed even more strongly than their spot at the dinner table. Do you have a side that you stick to for bedtime? Which is it? (Assume you are facing the foot of the bed for Right vs. Left)

My husband and I traveled a lot. In order to not have a conversation every night about which side, I decided to take the right side since that was the side I had at home. Sometimes I was nearest the bathroom, sometimes he was. It was a great decision to choose a permanent side. When alone, the entire bed is my territory.
I sleep on my right side and prefer to face out toward edge of bed. My husband feels the same except he sleeps on his left side so he uses the right side of bed. A perfect match!
Other because I always sleep on the side that is closest to the door. I've always been the one to deal with the needs of children and animals.

So, you people with dogs who cohabit the bed; do THEY sleep on the door side to protect you in the event of a home invasion....aaaannnnddd...do you sleep in a king size bed, because that sounds like a LOT of bodies in one place!

@Sharon McLaughlin Bill Cosby did a great routine about siblings sleeping together called "To Russell My Brother, Whom I Slept With". I'll bet @Select Hardwood's Dad had one of those belts.....
@BungaloMo and other "hot flashers"- I hear tell that bamboo pajamas are just the thing and you don't need to keep changing them all night.
@redecoratingtropicalcalm-Sounds like the ol' boy needs to keep an ice bucket by the bed...to wake you up in cause of fire.
@Jean Stryker-No one sleeps in a closed Murphy bed!

I almost forgot..@ Mark Bischak-Someone tell @Select Hardwood they have his pajamas!

River Valley Cabinet Works: The furkids and I sleep in a king-size bed and you bet they would protect me in the event of a home invasion. They don't need to sleep on the door side because no unauthorized person is going to make it to my bedroom. Oddly enough, it is one of my cats that is the first to detect unusual activity, though. But I wouldn't want to be a burglar in my house when my boys come racing out of the bedroom, teeth bared, spit flying and toenails scrabbling for purchase on the porcelain floors. I live alone and I feel quite safe between the electronic and the hot-blooded security systems.

Figured out it was safer to fall asleep on the couch watching TV with my eyes closed, and quieter. Side benefit: you know who goes in and out the front door.

Left always,....I guess I am a creature of habit!
My husband is left handed and I am right handed. Think about it.
Almost always the right or if bad position of bed closest to the door!
I've never given a minute's thought to having my husband closer to the door to protect me, and am amazed that it's so common. I would hope if something happens, the dogs would bark their fool heads off. I know our old dogs would, but our current ones are another matter.

I sleep on the left side of the bed, and started that with my ex as it was easier to snuggle that way.

When we were cruising in our boat, we frequently had to run overnight and sleep in 3-hour shifts. In those instances, rather than sleeping on our side of the bed, we slept in the warm spot made by the other person. I believe it was called "hot bunk'ing".
My Ex could not have protected me. I never give that a thought even when my boyfriend is here. I love to be near the door.
Which ever side is closest to the window :)
I sleep on the right side of the bed because that is were the light is located and I have a better view of the television. Not to scientific for me is it?
What makes everybody think an intruder will enter through the bedroom door rather than through a window or something?

River Valley Cabinet Works: My dog and I change positions a lot while sleeping. His goal is usually to stay between me and the fan, lol. He's much faster in and out of bed than I am, so for protection purposes it doesn't really matter.

We switch every season based on heat and air conditioning because there is a vent duct on one side of our bed. In the winter she gets right side for more heat, in the summer I move to the right side to stay cooler.
I realized it was the side closest to the door for getting up on the middle of the night

    @makaloco- Excellent point!

That reminds me...this happened a while back, but one night the smoke alarm went off for no apparent reason. I jumped out of bed and was tearing around the house to find the fire. No fire, but the kids slept through it, which is more unnerving.

When will there be a poll asking which shoe we put on 1st?
Right, currently. It's changed over the years with husbands!
Select Hardwood, why don't you get it going today before this thread peters out?
I sleep on my right side mostly, so I had rather not be facing the inside of the bed as I sleep. My husband sleeps on his left side, but does sometimes turn over. If so at least he's exhaling on my back and not in my face!

Select, I put my best foot forward.

I would be more interested to know how that breaks down by gender, and door placement. I think those two factors might be the deal breakers.

Cute poll! I always sleep on the right side at home. When we travel we never discuss a side of the bed. I think we just fall where we fall after a couple (or more) cocktails :)

A lot of the women have already said they sleep closest to the bedroom door and the men sleep closest to the bathroom door.

This thread won't be considered to be petering out until @auntiebuzzybee and @Bubbasgma show up...then the pinging will start.

    Oh alright...
I always reasoned that the guy should place himself closer to the door, in order to be between the love of his life and a dangerous intruder such as a home invader or grizzly bear!
Of course, if there's an outside door in the master, that door trumps the interior door as the danger zone.

Of course, one could ALSO reason that the man should be closer to the door(s) to make for a quick escape... in order to run for help, because the girl would take longer, needing to put on a bit of makeup and fluff her hair before making an exit.

In the present day "same sex marriage" environment... a coin toss is recommended!

I'm always closer to the window and she's always closer to the bathroom....it keeps the peace!
Can't sleep if I'm not on my side of the bed, doesn't matter where, even in a hotel I have to have the right hand side.

I tend to go to the side of the bed I sleep on at home but do have the ability to adjust. Interesting comments though!
i always take the side closest to the bathroom, when we travel it may be the left or right
  • 11 years ago
I chose other because I sleep with my head on the top right, slanted, with my feet on the bottom left corner to stay away from the air conditioner blasting in my face.

I've never slept on my husband's side of the bed, and doubt I could! Talk about being stuck in a rut!

currently, the right side - however, I'm flexible. Whichever is closer to the bathroom.
RVCW, no he's pretty good about that, but he does snore like a freight train so I get up and sleep on the couch when that happens.
I always sleep on the side close to the window, like air.
Left. Always. My husband passed 14 years ago, and I still don't use the whole bed. Weird. 'Course now, the cats occupy a lot of mattress real estate :)

Mostly the right. But I tend to switch things up every year or so. I might sit on my partners side of the bed one evening and decide it's my side for the rest of the year. Thank goodness he just chuckles and lets me.

I just don't want to be against the wall. As long as the bed is not pushed up against a wall then it doesn't matter which side I'm on.

The side closest to the bedroom door. Don't know why. We have two homes and I sleep on the right in one and the left in the other...go figure.

To mary1028 - my husband passed away 11 years ago. I stayed on "my" side for about a year. Now I sleep in the middle. The cat sleeps on either side or the foot.

The bathroom side with a 38 on my side.

    In the middle!!!

It depends where the dog and cat decide they want me.

When we were first married I was on the left side of the bed......not for any reason I can remember. But when we moved I ended up on the right because that's where we could fit our cradle. And I'm still there, even though now the cradle is for grandchildren. Thanks for such a lovely reminder on Mother's Day.

I'm single got the whole king size bed to myself.. :-)
