Living room layout, decor, & rug placement

Hi everyone! We just moved into a new house and I'm looking for suggestions in the layout of our living room, decor, and rug placement. We don't want a tv above the fireplace so we put it against the wall. I'm worried about having multiple focal points.

Also, we have a sectional sofa that I'm not crazy about but will be staying with us for the near future. Is our rug placement okay? It's roughly 7x9. I just bought that so please don't say y'all hate it! :)

I never knew there were so many "rules" with decorating! I want our living room to feel comfortable, relaxing and calm. Thanks in advance!

Congratulations on your new place it looks beautiful :)
Could you move the rug more to the center of the room everything of volume is pulling to the one side trowing things off balance .

For extra storage I would prefer something like these instead of the open shelves ,it also saves on dusting time :))

I should mention, please excuse the mess and my husbands cameo! We are not entirely unpacked yet, and have no place for our knick knacks, plants, etc yet. We plan on getting curtains for the big picture window, and possibly shelves for under the transom windows. Those two blank areas/corners under the transom windows are giving me a hard time. Not sure how to use the space.

Try centering the rug and all that's on it in front of the fireplace. Now your focal point is the fireplace and you have better viewing for the TV

Your room is lop-sided because it's pulled to the left. Have hubby scoot rug and all to the right so your sofa/rug are centered in front of FP.

If you feel that leaves a bare spot in front of the windows then add a palm or ficus. You could also add a table behind the back of the sofa facing the window..

Pull the small table that has the plant over next to the sofa arm to act as an end table.

You have a great space to add an arched floor lamp--something like this.

I prefer bookshelves or matching cabinetry under the transoms...adds character. Here are some ideas.

I agree with Genevieve about the shelves next to the fireplace esp the 23rd Street picture.
