If you like it do it ! a few suggestions, it that is a sample for color only, then ok, ir it is a sample of an actual cabinet door--it is a weird proportion. Also would suggest floors to be similar in color to cabinets.

I agree proportions are wrong if that's actual door. Looks nice though otherwise. I disagree with matching cabinets to flooring -- too boring and probably too dark with this cabinet. I am a firm believer in tile in the kitchen. Too many leaky water dispensers in refrigerators and leaky dishwashers. But if you did chose wood, I would go with a lighter wood than cabinets. Hey, search photos on Houzz to get more ideas.

With a door like that you better always use the AC in summer and a humidifier in winter. It's going to have significant warpage over the season with that super wide stile and rail.

Cherry has much to pretty of a grain to pay it's premium upcharge and then obscure it with a dark stain. Do something like an oak or pecan if you want a dark stain. It accepts stain well, and it won't obscure it's open grain like it will with the closed grain cherry.

Love the stain. I agree with Lisa when it comes to the floor. There should be a contrast and being that your cabinets are dark I would definitely go lighter. I have cherry cabinets in my kitchen and went with a distressed eucalyptus wood floor. It is a very hard wood and extremely durable. I love it!

I love the stain color! I have cherry cabinets with a dark walnut stain. The wood floors are a little lighter. I think it looks great. If you love dark cabinets, that's all that should matter :-)

Thank you for your suggestions! Yes, that is just a sample door...the proportions are not what we would be doing. Ours will have a 3 1/2 inch rail, shaker style.

With such a dark stain, will the color change over time, like I hear cherry does?

We are in the middle of our kitchen renovation right now and opted for the cherry cabinets. we opted for the Silestone Tigris Sand quartz counter tops because they played well with the crema marfil porcelain floor tile. I love the contrast of the dark cabinets against the light color floor and counter tops. As you can see from the pictures we have not installed the back splash yet. We've selected cream buff subway tiles with an accent band that will be

(forgot to finish) The accent band on the back splash is a combination of frosted glass, clear glass with a silver foil backing, reddish brown that complement the cabinets and crema marfil marble tiles that blend will with the counter tops and floor. I sooo can't wait until it's done....

Cherry does get darker over time. Ask your cabinet maker about using birch instead.

Just finished adding 10' to a nearby bathroom in a 1946 built ranch house making it into a true master suite with access from the bedroom. I chose custom cherry cabinets stained in a rich brown with marble counter tops (caballa oro (sp?), hawthorne manor (Florida Tile Company), porcelien (sp) floor tiles with same colors as the marble, largely copper color running thru it with hints of other colors. It's all gorgeous as others have said to me & contractor has taken photos for his facebook page & business website. I personally would not do wood floors in a room such as a kitchen especially with dark cabinets as it will make the room look much smaller than it is & darker. But then I'm just not a fan of matchy, matchy. Also w/3 large dogs a dark hardwood would just add to my housekeeping chores & cleaning time. I know hardwood kitchen floors seem to be the trend right now but I personally don't feel it is a practical option considering the spills & traffic even if one does not have pets inside the house.

maryenidlareg Thank You! the picture really doesn't do it justice. The clear glass tiles with the foil backing adds more bling then is apparent in the photo. Because I kept everything so neutral the back splash accent tile really sets it of nice!

smkrauss I agree with kathicalif29. I personally would not put hardwood floors in a kitchen or bathroom for more than one reason number one being maintenance. Tile is so much easier. But if you like it then by all means do it! As for the wood color....I would have the same struggle with choosing the color as you are having. and there is my second reason for going with tile.....

I have hardwood floors in my kitchen and love them - had tile 2 homes ago and hated it. :-)

Lynda ~ why did you hate the previous tile floors?

The tile was cold and hard. But, the biggest issue was cleaning the grout. First I had lighter grout, which was a real pain, so I had it all restained darker and sealed. It was still a pain to clean. No matter what I tried it just never looked like it did when it was newly done, whereas the wood still looks beautiful! I do have tile in my bathrooms as I didn't want to have to worry about steam and moisture issues. Everyone has their own preference, though.

Lynda - Can I ask if you used a grout sealer mixed into the grout when it was installed? We just installed 2000+ sf of tile (including in the kitchen) and had our installer use a mixed-in grout sealer, hoping that will help prevent the dirty grout problem you experienced.

The tiler said he had added something to help with sealing. However, when we changed the color it took it - we then had it sealed again. This was 10 years ago, so I would guess the new products out there are better. We just built a new home last year and tiled the whole basement including the kitchen (1700 sq ft mother-in-law apt) and we used a rectified? edge with a super skinny grout. I wasn't as worried about it since it wouldn't be used much.

You are wasting your money on cherry if you stain it any dark color. Use some less costly wood whenever going with dark stains.

If that is an actual door, you are going to have problems with twisting and warping. It's defeating the purpose of rails and styles with a panel.

My cherry cabinets are stained a dark walnut and I don't think the money was wasted. You can still see the grain and from the OP's picture, I can see the grain on her sample piece. My cabinet maker was the one that recommended I go with cherry when I told him I wanted a darker stain?

The stain is a "black" stain and it's from a cabinet shop in Salt Lake City, Utah...

I've been told real cherry wood does get darker in time and that most of what people call cherry wood is actually a reference to the stain color on another underlying wood, like birch or alder. Just saying.

I Place kraftmaid cherry cabinet in a house 17 years ago with light green tile floor and they still look great today. I don' t like to see same wood cabinet and floor. It make the room look dark. Also wood floors in the kitchen will cause you problem soon or later. too many chances of water damage.
