Counter top for wall cut through?

I am planning an update to my kitchen which will include a cutout between the kitchen and family/living room. Both rooms are somewhat long & narrow. The bottom of the cutout will be at 42" high, with wall below to the floor.
Should I match the counter top being used in the kitchen to create a sitting area at the cutout or not? And which side should the overhang be? With seats in the kitchen facing living room or in living room facing kitchen?
Also, should the cutout be framed with molding to match the moldings around windows and doors or should we not use molding?

If possible, match the countertop material with the kitchen, and also match any finishes that is facing the family room.

Pictures would help, but if by cutout you mean a pass-through, I would suggest you remove the whole wall instead. Pass-throughs are always awkward, they really don't make the space feel more open, and end up looking like Mickey D's drive-thru window in your home.

Is that in or out?
I have considering removing the entire wall but prefer to keep it for many reasons, including b/c there is a steam radiator smack in the middle of where the opening would be & we need the radiator for heat. I could be convinced to remove it still.

Here are some pics. The long wall is the one I'm referring to cutting a pass through. I plan to update both rooms with the "city Glam" look & feel that I previously posted. I am also concerned about placement of new furniture (yep all the furniture pictured will be replaced!) in family room & size and placement of sofa & chairs or sectional with pass through or wall removed.

That's a great family room. The windows are gorgeous.

I'm a little confused though. Where is the dining room built-in in relation to the sofa? Does the pass through go on the wall where the couch is now?

@roveraxle, Thanks!. Yes the pass thru will be where the long couch is & it backs up to the brown wall with the shelves from the kitchen side. It will be approx 10' long.
