What's wrong with my hydrangea?!

I don't know what to do about my hydrangea! I planted it late June.

So far I have read up that it's blight and could be caused by either over watering and watering the leaves rather than the base or it's a fungus!!

Today I removed he mulch around it and out fresh mulch down then clipped off as many of the infected leaves as I could.

What is it and what do I do to keep it alive?!

Is the mulch dyed? Can't quite tell, but if so that could be the problem. Dyed mulch contains chemicals that leach into the soil & can negatively affect soil health.

I have two peony plants located near it and those leaves are starting to turn purple as well

Looks like dye from mulch is being absorbed when you water. You might try straw, a high quality mulch or rubber mulch.

My peonies are finally ok--after removing all the gosh darn mulch I'd so lovingly heaped around them. Truly, just try getting rid of the mulch or else keeping it several inches away from the base of your hydrangea and peonies. They need some air down there!

It is a good idea and you can always use pine straw around the base of plants to hold moisture and keep roots cool in the summer. I have used rubber mulch and the color seem to be more color fast and seems not to affect my plants. I have recently seen a artificial pine straw, but it is expensive and not practical if you get leaves in it. .It is always best to go natural (Pine Straw) especially around succulent plants. Try to use your own trees so you won't import foreign weeds or find a local dealer. I have a weed that came in mulch from somewhere 10 years ago and I am loosing the battle with it.
