Consider painting the backs of your cabinets with glass doors a contrast color or put fabric panels in the back to add interest. Green may look nice with your scheme. Not too bright, make sure it has a touch of gray value and a yellow not blue undertone.

I'm with D&O Cabinets... a warm white (with no yellow undertones). They are classic and will not tire of them easily. Since you have dark slate floors a pale grey would also look fabulous. The trick will be finding the right tone to work with the backsplash. Bring home lots of colour chips and see how they look under different light conditions. You will also want to use an eggshell or semigloss on the cabinets....and paint chips are always in flat. This will reflect the light differently.... something to consider. good luck!

I agree about the antique white, and maybe change the pulls to be a brushed nickel. Consider having someone spray laqour them for a real pro finish. Love your baking!! Also, Home Depot (if you have one) is now staining in many different colours over your existing cabinets. Check them out if there's a colour you like. Honey oak is always dated, but a walnut brown or if they can do antique white would look great, even keeping the grain.

I like the antique white as well, but would consider doing an espresso on the bottom cabinets, and the light colour on the top - similar to this one but the top cabinets would be softer in your case with the Antique White:

I also agree that antique white would look great in your kitchen and yes, try lots of paint chips and then go even one step more by purchasing a small amount and painting some squares of the color and taping to the cabinets for a few days to see how it all looks. I would also place chicken wire inside the glass doors to enhance the doors. Only really interesting things should be on such clear display.



If you go for the chicken wire idea then use satin nickel hardware for the pulls and knobs, perhaps something with a bit more character such as the Quincy knob

Cream painted cabinets and keep your hardward, it goes with the style of your cabinets, brushed nickel is over done and it looks like you may have black appliances.

You could secure wall paper to the inside of the cabinet glass doors for interest. Do a very subtle design.

if you go with antique white, the island should be brown. black is too harsh. with brown it will be softer and the antique white will make your kitchen look bigger and brighter. good luck on your project. post some pictures when its done.:)

Sandi, yes that would look great, I would do the black and you could also sand over the edges a bit to reveal the wood. I think this would keep it in the character your kitchen has. You have lots of black already with the appliances so I would not want to do the island a solid black. You rkitchen has loads of natural light so this should all look amazing.

Here is a picture of an island in this finish.

Soft white cabinetry around perimeter, dark oak island. Keep your backsplash tiles. Remember, your cabinetry refinish is only as good as the proper steps to finish properly. TSP clean all your cabinets, then sand, sand, SAND the finish off progressively going to softer grit on your sandpaper, then prime coat twice, then finish with 3 to 4 coats of oil based semi gloss paint. Lots of work, but well worth it for the value you will get in the long run. If you do not do all the proper steps, your cabinet paint finish won't last as long - good luck!

De gustibus non disputandum est ... BUT ... those cabinets look good quality wood; have you considered stripping the walls and painting them Keim Regency White? Will give you a clean glow, and I know it works with slightly yellowish marble surfaces and grey marble/slate. That way you get rid of the fussiness of all the different surfaces (and by the way, a lot cheaper and easier to achieve!) The Keim is particularly good because it is a mineral paint and gives a lovely soft glow, while still being a matt/eggshell finish. (The White House is not always wrong:)

On the attached image, forget the stark modernity of the kitchen, but the wall colour is the Keim I mentioned. It has to work with limestone flooring and dark marble floors and dark granite works surfaces in this picture; you can see it with a yellowish marble in the bedroom photo.

... and by the way, how about changing those handles? Don't they hit you between the eyes? How about semi-inset, same wood ... or brass at worst ... but dark like that, they come from Georgian rustic design, not meant to work with fielded panels.

I agree with everyone who suggested a classic antique white for the cabinets. A black island would be nice but I'm wondering if your kitchen is on the small side, maybe it would chop things up visually. Just something to consider. Good luck!

I like the suggestion on contrasting bottom and top cabinets. Painted mine slate satin black on bottom and light coffee cream on top. Looks great

Cream cabinets, black island keeping it consistant with the appliances and the hardware may be perfect. After you have painted everything and the handles are not quite right you can switch them out but I think they will be fine. They are small in size as to not take away from your beautiful deatailed cabinets.

I'm on board with a dark base cabinet in charcoal or slate, lighter on top - antique white. For the glass front doors, use frost film from Tap Plastics. Apply to inside of glass. Tap has full instructions and tools. Rather inexpensive and looks like the glass has been sandblasted. Great solution for windows too when the view is less than ideal, yet you want to let the light in.
