Gel fuel fireplace vs ethanol

I'm considering purchasing a fireplace for my apartment and I was looking at a few different kinds. I'm trying to decide wether to go with the gel fuel kind or the ethanol burning kind. Is it safe to actually cook food in the fire, for example make s'mores with either of those?
