I would put the love seat back against the window and put the blue chair on an angle on the other side of the TV (where you had it before, just on an angle like you have now) Looking good though!

Your best, most functional arrangement is with the loveseat under the window and the chair facing. You need a new TV console. A fabulous craigslist find painted blue would fit this room perfectly.

I know about cats and drapes. My ex once chased the cat with the spray bottle after the cat wanted out one too many times in the middle of the night. The curtains did not survive. Gray bamboo shades will look a lot better here.

Lose the shelves in the corner. Nothing about them works. Sell them on craigslist, or trade for the great Hepplewhite sideboard you're going to paint to put the TV on.

I rearranged your framed stuff too. And added a blue and yellow pillow to go with the yellow pot the tall plant is in. Didn't paint though. Don't know that you need to.

I like the last arrangement with the chair back where it started and the window open. Looks like you found something to put beside the chair, too. What is the love seat now in front of? Is it blocking anything?

For now, I would clean off the wall beside the tv until you get it arranged....or do it how grover shows it.

What does the wall behind the couch look like now? How big is the foyer that was just created? Does the little table work there?

Hello Alisha Mervyn, congrats on your new home! Like the blue single seater away from the window as it has character & form & will stand highlighted there. Could probably add a console behind the 3 seater ( probably with table lamps). That will help define the seating area better. Have you considered doing a picture wall next to the door way?!You need to get pieces that will add to the style of your room.(if you are getting any new furniture or accessories) It is definitely coming together.

I like this arrangement. I would take down that little mirror and shelf by the door. They look too small and light.

How is your lighting in the room? Does that chair need the floor lamp by it for reading?

On the foyer's long wall, maybe a long mirror and a floating shelf.

For sure....great idea to take down the mirror and shelf by the door now that the couch is there. Mirror might be used, depending on where the small table got put.

I was looking for corner shelves, to get ideas for you for accessorizing, but came on this photo. This striped treatment, in the right gray blues, would be a good way to add some color and interest to your room.

Look close and you can see the shelf in the photo. Are you open to painting that piece? Maybe a white like the sheers. That would give more contrast also. Getting accessories right is an art with a lot of trial and error!

Went shopping for decorative pillows. Bought some exactly like the ones groveraxle showed- blue, brown and with a more muted yellow though.

The picture arrangement is lovely! Will hang it over the entryway table on the opposite wall.

I love the idea of painting the shelf white and making it less noticeable. I have white spray paint and primer which I used for a different project. Will that work or should I go for a more creamy or warm white?

Loveseat in front of the window helps to hide the short drapes.
Blue chair placement helps to give more room to enter the area towards the end of the sofa.
When the tall shelving unit was on the wall close to the window there were too many tall things on that side of the room (shelves, window & door).. the plant helps add a shorter item.
May I suggest placing the shelving unit on the wall to the left of the TV just to see (because there is nothing tall on that wall now) if you are keeping it.
Will you be using any lamps in this room?

Good morning! These are the pillows we got. Now that we have those maybe I need to start looking at curtain ideas cos the pink looks so out of place. I could probably reuse the hardware. With the current scheme would dark blue curtains look better or light? If I reprint the shelving white what shade should it be?

Getting there. Can the corner bookshelf be put into the corner, cross wise and just pull the chair out a bit if you have to. I would move the table on the long wall down a bit into the middle and remove all of the small items. Just need something larger/more substantial and add a mirror above. Bamboo blinds may be the answer for your cat and for the look of the room. I may have gone with pillows that had blue in them, to tie in with the blue chair.

Well, I am late to the party too - stuff happens, I guess.

This is a lovely space and just needs some playing around with the pieces to make it function in a convenient but balanced way. This is groveraxle's concept and I whole heartedly agree - almost . . ..

Considering the fact that there are 2 walkways in this space, you could place the loveseat back where it was, by the windows. As it is now, the loveseat is blocking the entrance into the tv area. By moving it over to the window wall, you would be opening up the way into the setting.

The blue chair needs to be placed in a softer way, off to the tv side and angled into the setting. Now, there is a wide, clearly defined path into that area.

Align the sofa with the edge of the door frame - pull it forward. The 'foyer' is too narrow. It is ok for the love seat to be off center on the window wall.

Short curtains aren't going to look good in any color. If you can't have them to the floor, please go with shades. They'll give your space a much more put-together look.

I agree you need more blue in the pillows to draw the chair color across the room. Otherwise the chair looks like odd man out.

The shelves in the corner are too tall to begin with, the style doesn't go with anything else in the room, and unless you have a fabulous collection of McCoy pottery or ancient artifacts, they're going to become a repository for a bunch of not particularly interesting stuff. A plant would add more life to that corner.

Have to say, after seeing your new pillows, I'm a little confused. Your original post was "I need color!!!", yet the new pillows are so neutral and coordinate with your current palette, you could keep everything as is. Oh no! I just read you're thinking of changing out the drapes-(the only color you have besides blue). Alisha, you're a dear---we've had you rearrange furniture, buy pillows, rid yourself of the drapes, etc. and you've been such a good sport about it. Perhaps, it best if you stick with your neutral color palette (took a glance at your ideabook and see a pattern of simple and neutral) and just add colorful artwork. Best of Luck to you... :)

Might not want to paint the shelf unit just yet. So far, you have wood pieces and will be purchasing the tv console. You really have to get that piece first because you do not want a lot of different finishes in this room. You might want to leave the shelf unit natural. In a space this size you would be pushing it to have 3 different kinds of furniture.

Ok to paint now if you have settled on a natural wood finish on the tv cabinet. It might work to paint it a color with a glaze to age it some. Why not? This could be a color that is in the large artwork across the room - linking the 2 sides of the space.

The long wall behind the sofa needs more. A long console or floating shelf with a mirror or large art would be the ticket. This is only if you move the setting closer to the tv. Store stools or poufs under for extra seating. This is the wall that will balance the tv wall so it needs some heft.

Projects are such a song and dance with lots of trial and error. Usually, you place the large pieces, then work down in size from there. Until you get this settled, you might want to wait on accessories. Big > small. The new pillows might work now, but you don't have your artwork yet, a rug, window treatment, etc. I hope this makes sense. . . .

I have three cats that have trashed some furniture so I know what you are up against. But you can find some nice floor length curtains that wouldn't cost much and add a lot to your room. It would really help to balance the bulk of the sofas if you went for 96 inch drapes and hung them almost to the ceiling.

Looks to be a pretty narrow passageway from door behind the sofa. So narrow that I think the foyer table intrudes too much. Try sliding it down the same wall, but right next to the light switch. Might or might not work.

The halfwall between the kitchen & living room has not been addressed. What is on the other side of that wall .. a hallway. If that wall could be removed there would be more space... but probably not possible.
I think the chair should be tried to the left of the TV on an angle, Loveseat on the window wall , Sofa in the spot where it is now. Then there could be a cabinet placed against the halfwall (think the was one there before.

So I switched a few things around.

Like groveraxle said, I put the love seat near the window and the blue chair at a slight angle towards the tv. Moves the sofa forward to increase the walkways. Got some yellow flowers. Bye bye burgundy table cloth.

Guess I didnt do too well with the pillows. Can we add that color by using a blue throw blanket like one of the commenters suggested? If so what kind?

"Shortened" the shelving unit. Moved the tiny table to the middle of the wall. Does the table look better there? If the position is fine I'll hang the pictures over the table in the arrangement that groveraxle made.

I've also attached a pic of the other wall like you asked. It's a half wall leading to the basement.

Think the tv should be directly in line with the center of the sofa. Try moving the blue chair with a lamp to the left of tv. Right now, it looks like blue chair is blocking access to the sofa.

Still think an armoire to hold tv would be good.

Be patient, this all takes time!

@Alisha Mervyn... would you please position the blue chair on the TV wall to the left of the TV on an angle... then the entry point to the seating area will be in the middle if the arrangement. The entry point to the side makes it seem like another hallway. This is the only spot that hasn't been tried. Thanks!

This was suggested way back....when you had the chair facing straight ahead to the coffee table; glad you tried it this way. I like this arrangement the best, as it seems to create a balanced room (just pull the chair in a touch closer). It looks so different from when you started, so your efforts paid off.

@Alisha... thanks... looks so much more balanced as Maureen said... I agree to pull forward a bit . Maybe you could try the floor lamp back in the room. place it to the left of the chair with the small stool in front of it ... take a pic .. then try on the other side of chair & take pic.

I would look for the furniture stain/style to match your coffee table and see what sizes they come in and what you can afford, as I'm sure the taller/larger you get the more expensive it will be. I don't think you need that much height as you don't want it to make the room look too small. Good luck.

I moved your chair out a bit. Because the blue is now on that wall, I chose Target's media cabinet in yellow, then painted your shelves the same blue as the chair (after removing one more shelf). Pillow in bright clear colors, and yes, I'm going to keep removing those red drapes. ;-)

I know you are itching to hang things on the wall and you are so smart to wait until you know the furniture is set. But hanging stuff will finish the look for you, too.

I am soooo hoping you will consider blinds for the windows. I keep looking at the ones grover has shown more than once. If you do not like that style, you can still you blinds, but the more traditional slatted ones in a darker color, too. The cats will leave those alone.

Before you paint any furniture, choose some art. It is often difficult to hang art around or over a tv. For sure though, you will want some art on the wall behind the sofa.

Choose art that has other colors that are obviously useful for accent colors in this room. What style of art are you thinking - contemporary, old master, etc.? .

The tv cabinet should be longer and taller than your cocktail table. This wall can take it. Vary the heights and widths of pieces to keep it interesting.

That tv console, or a larger one even, would help to balance out your large dark coffee table.

I am thinking the space would look lighter with the coffee table painted or distressed to a lighter wood.

Sandy G suggested a TV cabinet that is 36 inches tall. You could bump up your TV by putting something on top of your current TV stand to make it 36 in. tall to see if that is a comfortable viewing height when sitting on the sofa.

The coffee table is.....hefty. And that is good. I like it. BUT since it makes such a statement right there by the tv, I think it is important that it does not fight with the tv console. So does that mean the woods should match? Not match but coordinate? One be painted? One not wood? Not solid?

Not sure if you tried this but for my money, Craigslist is the place to go for "wood" products like a credenza-like thing for your t.v. I have purchased many tables, cabinets made of REAL wood for $50-$100, soo much better quality and sooo much cheaper than many furniture stores.

For great deals on armoires to hold tv or other furniture: consignment stores. Couples that are downsizing prefer to sell their (quality) furniture this way.

Great transformation!!! What about a big IKEA Kallax bookcase (on its side) with baskets for the tv? This comes in white or a wood color. I would recommend white. If you get a bigger tv, a LACK bookcase upside down works (these are very low to the ground). These can be repurposed in other rooms if you decide to buy wood furniture later. Also, I did some research for my mom recently, who has a similar color scheme to yours and had a little bit too much beige after her new carpets went in. I recommended a Pottery Barn pillow that is white, light blue or other shades of blue (solid), framed by a jute braid. My sister found a remake version. For accessories, a mirror tray on the coffee table could lighten things up. Also, low lights, no ceiling lights on can help a lot. I wouldn't paint until you live with the space awhile, so you have time to think about it. I'm thinking the room would benefit with the 'fresh' elements of wicker, rattan, white, mirror, light, etc. as it has the calm and cozy blue and beige. These suggestions would go with the blinds recommended earlier, or some other drapes (does your cat climb them, or just take naps under them?).
