Skeletons in my attic

I hired an electrician to update some old dim lighting in an old house and he had to go in my attic to work on some of the wiring...he then called me an left a message on my voice mail saying "I had skeletons in my attic (yes I own an old house). Turns out he is talking about some (old dead birds) birds that had gotten caught in the attic last winter and the remains were still there. He said perhaps there were a few dozen. Yikes.

My question is: Who do I hire to fix this? A dirty job for sure to clean up. I also someone to find the holes in the attic near the windows and cover them with chicken wire. Never a dull moment with an old house!! Do you think I have to hire an exterminator too??

Any thoughts?

A handy man in most cases would take care of this. Some will be weird about potential "diseases" and decline on doing anything with the skeletons. A local "disaster cleanup" would do it without question. They would clean, decontaminate if necessary, and in most cases have contractors on staff that could take care of the entry point.

Check your phone book for "animal control" "Pest control" or "trapping." Most pest control companies that include trapping animals such as raccoons or squirrels in your attic also provide what is called "Exclusion services" where they search for the entry point the animals are using and close it up so the animals can't use it anymore. Some of these companies will also remove any animal sign or debris such as nests, dead animals, and scat. I used a pest control company to trap some squirrels and exclude them from a space under my attic and they removed an incredible amount of trash and some mummified squirrels.

Agree w/ Jessica. We have some birds that nested in our bathroom vent pipes and some of the babies couldn't get out. The birds tore up the ducting and had scattered some debris around in the attic. The pest removal folks removed the old nest and dead birds, and put up cages over the vent opening to keep them from doing it again. It cost about $225.

Oh I hope little baby birds aren't caught in there. I hate that idea. Thanks for ideas!!

It's past mating season if you're in North America so there should not be any baby birds at this time of year. Most migratory birds are preparing for their annual trip south and others are putting on a layer of fat in preparation for winter. Like the old saying "Christmas is coming, the geese are getting fat, please put a penny in the old man's hat, if you haven't got a penny, a ha-penny will do, if you haven't got a ha-penny, God Bless YOU!"
