Looks like wood :-) , I know someone who has decking around their pool and it is starting to rot in places although it only appears to have been treated once about 5 years ago and not redone. Wouldve thought a yearly treatment would keep the top ok but its whats going on underneath you cant tell unless you remove them.

This is Ipe wood, which is an extremely dense, hard, wood. Like teak, you can leave it untreated and it will weather to a grayish tone or you can treat/seal it to maintain its rich brown color. It is widely (and successfully) used for pool decking.

Thanks a lot. My contractor checked on the ipe wood & he brought a sample this morning. As i mentioned in my initial comment, I would prefer a light coloured deck, and you mentioned teak wood. Would the finish look be much lighter? Have you heard of Dex-N-Dox? I found them online, and they do real wood treated it seems in some 'revolutionary '(sorry I am french!) way and you can get any shade, but they are no reviews on the internet. Thanks again for confirming that wood was okay.

We also wanted decking around our pool but have decided to go with a stamped concrete called boardwalk. It will have a gray tint. It should be less maintenance and last longer.

how did the garapa turn out? Is it as durable/low maintenance as Ipe? I would love to know! Thanks!

Sorry for the late update on the garapa wood pool deck. I work out of the U.S. & got back recently. The pool deck looks beautiful , and garapa is supposed to be a very dense wood that doesn't need to be treated. However, under the strong california sun i think it will tend to shrink and crack as I have several pieces of furniture and artefacts from Africa, and they have cracks. So I am going to apply some waterproofing sealant and see how that works.
