Some under cabinet lighting would be great too, especially with that dark backsplash.

You have done a great job updating your kitchen. I know first hand the work you put into this and it is a labor of fulfillment. I have a few suggestions that you can mull over. Please take them with a grain of salt. Before I make the suggestions I need to share that keeping the wood floor was a great move. Also please understand, these are my suggestions and not "The gospel according to me".

Ok so, from the view and lighting (picture quality) I am seeing:

1. The stove hood would be better boxed in and in a color to match the cabinets. It will give a more uniform look. Painting it and altering the doors along with the soffit area directly above will also add some architectural interest to the large blank soffit area. There are numerous ways to cosmetically alter that area and most are very inexpensive.

2. I would beef up the trim above the cabinets (See image) also add trim on the bottom edge of the cabinets.

3. There is nothing wrong with the large florescent in your current photo other then the casing is a bit dated. It provides perfect lighting and is wonderfully low maintenance. Putting in spots would be an expense. A barrel light could work but would be a grease collector and never get you the lighting you are used to. Hanging lights would look odd in this space. I would make a cover for your existing one matching the trim in the room. Then a pendant over the sink. and under cabinet lighting would be great.

At any rate you have done an awesome job. Tweeks are fun as long as you have someone that can use a miter saw you're golden.

Any chance you can put in recessed can lights [dimmable] around the kitchen? And smooth out the popcorn ceiling? Those will update the kitchen even more.
