POLL: Does your yard have a sandbox?

What kid doesn't love a sandbox? These can be hours of fun for sifting, pouring, and even digging for treasure. Does / did your house have one?

Not only kitties will use that sand box.

When my kiddos were little, we filled a whiskey barrel planter with sand. It was up on our deck away from rogue tomcats and other critters. It didn't last too long. I got tired of the mess. They played in the sand at the beach much more enthusiastically anyhow. :)

Covers are essential, to keep the neighborhood critters out. We buried "treasures" in our sandbox and then had birthday party guests dig up costume jewelry and coins and other pirate loot. They had a blast.

We don't have a sandbox yet-just moved-but we're planning on putting one in for the rabbit it'll help her cool down as she digs away in her section of the yard, which she hasn't had before

I don't have kids. But I do have a Zen sandbox. This was an old medical cart on wheels. Converted it into a sand box. Sits on my patio. Has a glass cover and can be used as a side table. Anytime I need to chill, I just pick up my piece of stag horn coral rake/pencil, and drift back to the time I lived in the Caribbean.

Not yet. We're about to move into our house and have already discussed one. Glad I read this though because I forgot about the critters.

We couldn't live without our "sand pit". Why not think outside the box! Living on a farm and it is still a hot spot for young and old guest to hang and create.

Never again. Put one in for my kids in GA and despite having a cover (soft top), it became a playground for bugs.

I have built several in the past 15 years. Great fun in the back yard, though at this scale supplies and maintenance require significant commitment.

I voted no, then I thought I should have voted yes because the shores of the Atlantic ocean is my sandbox.

My father ran a concrete business and therefore sand was plentiful, as well as worn-out front-end loader tires--one of which he half buried in our sandbox. Talking about a dream sandbox for a kid!

We used to have one, I actually dug out a ton of plants and even small trees that had started to grow in it. Last time I used it was at least 13, maybe 14 years ago. I am 18 so :)

Best advice I ever received was to "keep it small (and COVERED) so that it can be emptied regularly" due to the critters it will attract. Everything from bugs, to cats and rodents. Once I couldn't stand the mess any longer, we changed over to a small rice table with a cover on the deck. When summer rolled around,we switched out the rice for water!

I had an unintentional sandbox in a house I purchased. The previous owner had removed bricks from a patio when they moved out. The day after we moved in, as we were unpacking, I found my 5 year old step son loading kittie "logs" in his Tonka truck in the sand pit. All the neighborhood cats had been using the sand as a litter box for a year the house was unoccupied.
The next day, and the first work I ever did on the house, I bought bricks and restored the patio.
We had racoons, opossoms, squirrels and other animals in our yard. I still shudder to think what ICK was in that sand!

The previous owners of our home created a beautifully landscaped backyard for adults to enjoy. The addition of a sandbox and a nice patch of dirt has created a play area for my boys while the adults continue to enjoy the landscaping.

When my sons were of that age my husband, who loves gardening, decided to dig a square hole in the lawn and fill it with play sand. I would put a beach umbrella up and myself and a neighbor would sit in lawn chairs as our sons played with my husband's old bulldozer, dump truck, back hoe, and beach toys. We had a wooden platform ( originally built to raise a washing machine ) as a cover. As years passed, the sand pit returned to lawn and the yard became the local whiffle ball and kickball field,; complete with bases. Nice memories!

Don't have one, but I grew up with a sandbox! My brother is 4 years older than I and my dad built it when I was a baby. We, and our two sisters after us, loved playing in it!

When our children were young, my husband and son built a tree house between several trees and built a sandbox underneath so the tree house was like a canopy. Our two children had hours and hours of fun digging, burying and some serious farming in that sandbox.

You mean: does my yard have an outdoor cat litter box? Nope. If you do have one, be sure to cover it nightly or you'll find you have a horrible problem that can be a health hazard to your child. Cats, racoons, etc., all love to play and poop in it.
Our current home does not, but we had one in our prior house when our children were young.

    We had one when the
    Kids were little
And kept it covered to keep cats out. They loved it ....the kids.

Our four yr old grandsons enjoy the stand up one on our patio. They play close to us but are doing their own thing. This one has an attached machinable shovel they really use a lot. Nothing like sand and water to learn about spacial elements and how water and sand can work for us as well as against us....they are having so much fun, they don't realize they are learning.

The neighbors turned one the their stone flower beds in front of their house into a sand box for the grandkids..they look really cute out there playing but I am so glad they aren't coming into my house when they are done. LOL My kids had a sandbox and loved it, me, not so much. Sand everywhere all the time.
Yes, with a cover that transfers to benches. Very popular style around here.

When we were building our deck my husband put storage underneath on one side and I had him put a large sandbox underneath on the other side. My kids spent many hours under there, out of the sun, playing. Even as tweens they could be found under there digging a tunnel to China. The vegetable garden was right beside it so they had built in snacks. They were encouraged to eat fresh out of the garden.

It extends from my cabin to Lake Michigan and is about 100 feet high.

Don't have one currently. However, as a child I had a sandbox in the back yard with a fitted cover that was put in place when not in use. The sand was replaced at the beginning of each summer. My grandfather made sand tables for the children's sabbath school at church. I think there were six. They were round and seated about 6 children each plus a teacher and were used with cut out paper dolls and animals to teach us Bible stories. They had covers so they could be used as a regular table when sand wasn't wanted. The church is still using them 40 years later.

We put gravel into the sand box that came built into our play set. No animal poop and many, many hours spent digging in the stones with toy trucks. My 3 boys loved this and had tins of fun!

Get a DOG! no cats in the yard. We also throw a tarp over the sandbox when not in use. Every kid should have a sand box. Every kid should learn about good hygiene and any kid who is too young too know should be supervised by an adult. We have a sand box for our grandsons and nieces and nephews - they all love it! AND, we allow our dog to dig in it too - keeps my flower beds free of digging. No kid has gotten ill in our yard yet! We have bug houses for all the bugs they capture around the yard! I vote YES!

Who needs sand when there is mud?
    Pea gravel.

@ Mark, Two words, "Cat Toilet" :o) LOL just kidding... enjoy
  • 11 years ago
I had one but the kids spent more time digging in the garden. So, I filled the sandbox with topsoil instead and now I can't keep the kids out of it. They do get muddy but that's what being a kid is all about. Never had a problem with animal deposits in it. Just weeds.

Sandboxes outside mean sand inside, although I have a grandson and he would love one. It also provides homes for various critters, so it would need a cover and as protection from rain, which we have gotten too much of in Texas so far this year.

I plan on making one for my children.I do agree that they'd be hours of fun for kids.

We bought one of those round plastic pools for little kids, filled it and voila instant sand box. Our 4year old granddaughter loves it! We change out the sand every so often. Plus she has one of those sand and water tables.

There's one in my backyard, and sand all over the backyard. I don't know how others do it, but if the kids had their way, the sandbox would be empty within a few days. They love to shovel sand into their toy buckets and dump it in other parts of the yard.
