There is a new product ( believe by rustolium ?) that allows you to Inexpensively change the color of Formica countertops. Check it out in lowes or homedepot.

A rusty/orange wall will blend with the floors and cabinets and should tone down the counters. I'd stick with fall colors and Tuscan accents.

However If you have an end vision in mind, might be good to paint the cabinets and countertops that now - will help you validate your tones now ( Inexpensively ) before you buy all new.

There is a product at Lowe's that is specifically made for countertops. A paint product that comes in a kit I believe. Several different colors that will transform your ugly green Formica to look resemble granite. It's really cool. I definitely would paint your cabinets as well! My go to paints are Sherwin Williams. The best product of theirs is a paint and primer in one! It's not cheap but is an amazing paint! I would know-I've painted every room and cabinetry in two homes!! Good luck!

Use an off-white color for the cabinets so it takes some attention away from the green countertop.

I would paint your cabinets and all trim BM white dove,you r countertops will tone down once you paint those cabinets
