MDF provides for a seamless door, whereas wood has joints in the door, some of which will be visually apparent over time, providing an "authentic" look to a painted kitchen. Use MDF if you want a more sleek, modern interpretation. In cheaper painted wood cabinets, wood that is not dried as well before painting will expand and contract too much, and cheaper paint processes will then crack and separate and the cheaper paint will then not adhere as well and will lift from the wood at these separated joint lines... then you will go from "authentic" to "ratty" over about 2 years. If you are buying painted wood cabinets, you want to buy a premium cabinet, like Wood-mode and/or Wood-mode Brookhaven.
